Who Decides What Is Cool?

A lot of questions are asked about why, in spite of sex education classes, there seems to be so much ignorance out there about the consequences of unsafe sex practices.

Let's face it, most young people in the US don't listen to what older people say to them about sex. They don't generally listen to their parents, nor to teachers in sex ed classes.

They listen, or look, to the media for guidance (?) for the most part. And the media generally romanticizes casual sex. We almost never see movie stars discussing condoms. Instead, for the most part, they are engaging in unsafe sex and usually there are, magically, never any consequences shown.

The overall US paradigm in the dating scene is still, really, a form of prostitution; women sleep with men for money or power, and many are willing to forget safety in order to please the client. Ask any police vice squad about safe sex among prostitutes, male or female, and you will quickly get laughed at.

And semi-professional women fill the clubs and bars these days with attitudes not that different from their professional sisters.

Add to that legions of women who actually HOPE to get pregnant by a wealthy man who can be forced by palimony suits to support them and their child in luxury. This attitude is quite widespread among African American women, especially. What African American sports star, for example, doesn't have children very young? And it's not because their girl friends slept through sex ed class. The ignorance is quite deliberate here.

And who does the media talk to/about? Ministers in the African American community, or sports stars supporting several women and children by the time they are 25?

Of course this sort of behavior extends throughout society in the United States, although in varying degrees in different ethnic groups. Sleeping with the 'right' men is the way to the executive suite in most US corporations, for example. And a lot of those women wind up getting abortions along their career path. These are Ivy League graduate women in many instances. They aren't at ALL ignorant about what they are doing.

As long as market share mentality continues to govern large areas of people's behavior, there will be a market for unsafe sex as well.

paulthree A lot said in just a few words. God it will be hard for people to change! You're right, this is an ingrained cultural pattern people aren't usually even aware of.. - More than a year ago
Donna-la-Bella Food for thought here. People don't think about this enough. - More than a year ago
landoan Great article, very thought provoking. - More than a year ago
LishaJones I believe that if these teenage girls had some the could relate too it would help them understand safe sex. I was a teenage no so long ago. I had unsafe sex and got pregnant. My best friends has unsafe sex with older college guys and got an STD. If these girls could spend a a day in our shoes, talk with us, relate to us, and ask question I think we could get through to more teenages..vs having adults, parents, teachers, etc speaking to these girls. They need living proof this can happen to them - 11 months ago
dasouthernicon Tell it like it is- and in the Ancient Eight, these yung ladies are almost trained to be like men in a lot of cases.... the Drive-By media is doing their part to shape, mold, and dominate thought. It's depressing, most of their stories and viewpoints will never deliver as advertised. Ignorance is the mo$t expensive commodity in America today.... and please, marty, call "African-Americans" Black Americans.... just a thought..... anyways, gr8 stuff thar my man - 11 months ago
saturdayx Well said. I appreciate your charisma. Kudos. - 10 months ago
Jolly-Green-Giant I agree strongly with this however abstinence isn't even an option which I think could solve many issues and that comes back down to self control...anyway good article - 7 months ago
monkeywrencher Generally I disagree with your claims here. Most people are responsible and as a result horrific consequences don't occur, however it is only the cases in which they occur that attention is brought. In fact its really none of your business telling someone else who to sleep with or what a good motivation is to do so. - 7 months ago
