Damn it, I was going to say moms until I read the details lol
Despite all the cops and members of the military in my family, I'm not going with them because I think people are capable of protecting themselves otherwise. If it weren't for sanitation workers, things like cholera would still be rampant, so they get a gold star from me, but I'm not picking them. Doctors definitely play a vital role in society, but I'm not choosing them. Researchers trying to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS--love what they do, but I'm not going with them either.
I'm going with teachers. Some of them are God-awful, but the ones who enjoy what they do have a lot to offer students. All the other members of society learn from them; if they fail, we all do.
I don't think anyone is more important than another person. I think they are all important, even the the people who do jobs that aren't really considered to be by most people. Everyone has their purpose in life and in society, even the people who do the most menial of tasks. The way I see it, everyone is connected like a chain; if even one of the links are missing, then the chain would be broken. Each link is needed in order to hold everything together. Does that make sense...?
Yes, and I agree....but, there are certain jobs that only a few people can do/will do that are absolutely vital to a functioning society. Their supply is low and their demand is high, so that makes the people of their profession MORE important than other people because of their rarity (same reason why you pay more for diamonds than a rock). - A month ago
If we are talking about a classical view of society that is basically a large group of people working together towards a common goal, then everyone is important. If any one person rises above anyone else in the group, their desires may rise above the needs of the group as a whole. In this way, the most important thing is that no one be more important than the group. In fact, the Group, as an entity of its own, is the most important.
If you are talking about a modern society as we know it, then I would have to say that consumers of goods and services are the most important. These days money is the grease that allows the gears of society to turn. If there are no consumers, then there can be no industry. There can be no professions. No one can rely on apecific skills to make it in the world since no one else is willing to give them the means to live by performing with those skills alone. We, essentially, go back to providing for ourselves... which is the opposite of society.
Your 1st paragraph describes communism, and that isn't the case in America. Your second paragraph describes America to a T, which is why we are in an economic contraction.....a "consumerist economy" is not sustainable. We've been living in a credit bubble for the past 40 years because we haven't produced sh*t while we've spent ourselves into a hole so deep that we will be buried in it. Just ranting (not trying to detract from your answer). - A month ago

Indeed my first paragraph describes communism. A society, at its most simplistic level, is communism. It is a group of people working towards a common goal. That is, in fact, the definition of 'society', and the foundation of communism. It may not be the case in the USA, but is certainly still a society. - A month ago

My second paragraph does hold most true for a capitalistic society, like the USA. However, it still holds true for a complex communistic society. There are doctors and grocers in communistic societies. All goods and service providers would still be equally unable to contribute to the society as a whole if no one was a 'consumer'. It is the complex system that provides the need for different branches of profession. It is to fulfil our basic needs (and luxury desires) that any profession exists. - A month ago

Thus, there are my two distinct answers for either a simple society or a complex society, respectively. - A month ago

Probably the police, EMT's, and firefighters. Because without them, many people would be dead.
I concur. The police have a bad reputation with a lot of people (even me sometimes), but if you had an anarchy situation then everybody would only be worried about self-preservation instead of advancing society. Nobody would go to graduate school if they had to worry about getting shot or raped everywhere they went. Most people who advocate anarchy wouldn't even last 2 months in prison. - A month ago

Yes, order is key to survival. Police are so under-appreciated, and hated by many people, that it is a wonder where they find their motivation to go to work everyday. However, there are some crooked police out there, but the majority deserve our highest respect. - A month ago
I think everyone is important in their own way and that we are all equal. I know that sounds tacky but that's my opinion. I have no favorites based on people and level of importance because EVERYONE is important one way or another...
So a grocery bagger is as important to society, in your eyes, as a neurosurgeon? - A month ago
