Guys are naturally afraid of commitment, while girls are more willing to enter one. This is why many guys bail or refuse to give in until he's properly pushed. Not all men are like this, but the majority do need a push.
Shyness? Being afraid of getting rejected? Enough reasons even though they're "stupid" ones...
As for me if I like a girl and that girl would ask me "do you like me" I'd simply tell her "yes, I do"... maybe in other words but I'd not lie to her... I see no reason in denying something that is apparent :)

Well, there are "friends" and there are "aquintances" aka friends :D As for getting asked in public, well, I don't like talking in public about my feelings so I'd deny close to anything asked directed at me or I'd simply not answer. And then there's the difference between getting asked by a friend and those "aka friends" ^^ I'd deny anything or refuse to answer on the second group, too.
