Being protective is one of our baser instincts. It's the same as saying "ouch" when you get hurt. We fight, we protect, we breathe. and sometimes, all in that order.

If I saw a girl crying, and I was friends or more with that girl, I would go over to her and find out what is the reason for the tears.

unlike the other guys here (no offense), I would not go over to a complete stranger and try to console her. I just think that would be weird for both her and me.

I believe that being protective is part of testosterone, as protecting can often times lead to fighting or confrontation with another male. it's what we do.

Im a very protective guy. I just feel that if I love someone then I don't want to lose that. Keep in mind there is a difference between Protecting and keeping her away from everything.

Seeing someone cry that I know I would maybe have an idea of why she is crying and would listen to what she says and assist where I can.

With someone I don't know I would still walk up to them and ask if I can help them. It is hard going through stuff alone and I does wonders if you know there is someone there for you.

Well it's normal and it goes back to the caveman days where the man is the provider/protector. Our instincts automatically tells us what to do.

See a girl crying? If she's a good friend of mine then I am there all the way to see her through it and help her out, listen to what she has to say if she wants to talk about it. I'd ask why she is crying, if there is anything I can do, does she want to talk about it? In general console her and provide comfort.

If she's a stranger, I'd still go and ask if I can be of assistance.

What pickup lines do you use to start a conversation with someone you are attracted to?
PICK UP LINES SUCK!!!! really they do I believe that the best way to impress a girl is to either be funny or yourself, I opt for the latter although I am a bit weird :P ok a lot weird O_o

How do they typically respond?
That depends on the person some people love certain things others hate those same things you can never tell how a person will react

Do I have the right approach?
