He cares a lot about you. If you were feeling down, he would be feeling down too. He's emotionally attached to you. You may not be the one for him, but if you were not in his life, he'd be sad like he lost someone he really cared for.
He is all down for you! Ok here's the thing. You girls say "I love you" and most of the times that's it. We like to spoil you girls with cheesy sentences. You seem to like him too, and you are just assuming things because you are uncertain about what he meant. I've learned from my mistakes and when you like someone, take what he/she sais as IT IS. Don't try looking for a hidden meaning, because there isn't! It drove me crazy when my girl told me "I miss you" and "I love you" so many times, and I kept wondering if it was true, but when I called her it was obviously true! The way she spoke, the way we talked, everything!
