He does not want to hurt you he although lying to you which is not right and should be really discussed amongst the two of you but he values your friendship and could quite possibly want more so he does not want to burn bridges or offend you. You should talk about it let him know that even though you are not committed your friends and that always comes first even if it did turn into a boyfriend girlfriend relationship. friendship is the most important aspect and let him know seriously that he can tell you anything and you will remain open minded and understanding regardless.

Let him know that you too value him as a friend and you want him to know he does not have to lie about anything that you want to be here for him but if he is not honest then you can not really help him out. Let him know that the basis of even friendship is honesty and trust and that how you feel when even just your friends lie to you. tell him no pressure just to keep it real with you and reassure him your gonna do the same.
