He can't take a compliment

Question

My boyfriend can't take a compliment from me. I say something  like you look nice or you smell great and he says ya whatever.  What does this say about him? Sometimes because of his negative response I just don't want say anything.

I think that's kinda rude and that says a lot about him.  Most all people appreciate a complement especially a guy from his girlfriend.  Next time you give him a complement like the ones you mentioned here, and make sure that you do soon, if he gives you the same kind of response I want you to immediately ask him something like, "don't you think you look nice?"  or "Hey, I like how you smell so what kind of cologne do you have on?"  Ask a question that relates to whatever complement you give him when he answers that way.  Butttt, if he gives you another crappy answer, ask him another question like, "So don't you think you look or smell nice or what?"  Or... "What's with this whatever thing all the time"?"  You need to find out what the reason he's answering you like that and you WILL find out what his problem is.  Keep this in mind for him or for any future b/f.  Does he ever give you a complement?  If he does,... the very next time tell him, "Whatever" and see how he reacts.  I can assure he won't like it.  That'll be a perfect time to tell him that's exactly how you feel whenever you tell him something nice about him.  Okay?

wow some people in here kind of judged your man without even knowing him. Maybe he has low self esteem (Lord forbid a guy admits that!) I'm the same way...women give me compliments and I just don't see it so my first response is kind of scoffing and saying no. But that's because I look different than I did in HS.

Some guys are "too manly" to accept compliments. Even these "manly men" like those compliments they just won't admit it.

Now if he was cocky and arrogant about it, then Id say screw em...but that doesn't sound like the case.

If it bothers you that much, why don't you just ask him? Communication is key in a relationship! Cheers mate...

I think he does not believe you by saying that or maybe he likes it but he's shy so he said that.

ya know, your missing a piece of the puzzle. some men, and women can be raised a certain way. for myself, I was abused as a kid, any compliment I ever got was followed by a blow to the face. to this day, anyone who gives me a compliment I still inwardly cringe.

does this make me a bad person? no. being negative does not mean you are not capable of loving or being loved, it just means we don't know how to Display it properly.

sometimes, maybe the compliments need to come in a different way other than verbal.

if it was me, instead of saying I smelled good, I would perfer a gentle nuzzle on the neck. I may not say thank you, but I'd get the message and respond in kind.

Yeah, kind of a snotty response when a thank-you would be just as easy to say. I guess it simply means that he never learned how to take a compliment OR that it's some macho way of saying that it's no big deal.

Hey, maybe you could try dissing him sometime and seeing what his reaction would be then.
