I have been hanging out with a guy I met through my part time job.  We don't work together, he is a customer.  (I work part time for a video rental store.)  When he suggests we go out, he pays.  When I suggest we go out, I pay.  Or we split the expenses.  We have fun together, and there is nothing serious going on.  The other night he called and asked me if I wanted to come over for dinner (we have cooked for each other before and no big deal).  I said sure.  When I got to his place, there were flowers, candles on the table, soft music.a real romantic scene.  I was shocked.  I have always seen him in jeans, and really casual clothes.  This night he was dressed up, and looked HOT!  I didn't know what was going on, so decided not to say anything.  We had a fabulous dinner (he's a great cook) and things seemed normal.  Afterwards we watched a movie.  When I got ready to leave, he walked me to my car (normal behavior) and I went to kiss him on the cheek (also normal behavior for us to kiss on the cheek goodbye or hello).  He turned his head and kissed me fully on the mouth.  Then thanked me for the date.  He never gave any indication that we were ever more than friends, so I never expected anything like this.  When I asked him what was the reason behind the whole scene, he told me it was time we had a nice date rather than our casual ones.  I never considered we were dating.

I'm gonna keep it short and sweet here.  I think under vague or questionable circumstances, as in when the plans are made, the behavior on the "date" dictates if it's an actual date or not.  If even that's vague, there's always the good old question "What do you think of this as?".

well he probably likes older women.plus umm, yeh obviously he wants to date you, normal friends don't do that sort of thing, and he didn't straight up tell you probably because he expects you to know that he wants you.and wants to take that whole friendship thing to the next level.

If you feel the same way about him then great! and he most likely was too afraid to ask you out on a real date.

but if you see him as only a friend then gently let him know that. I know that that'll really disappoint him but it's better than leading him on.
