girls like random guys. its just how we are wired. just like how guys are wired to play halo 3 after making out. lol. just talk about life, current events, and stuff like that.
Anything and everything, not perverted. Ask her questions. A great ice breaker is a compliment or about something that relates to the both of you, like something going on around you. She might be shy about replying at first, but keep trying and she'll warm up to you.
I suggest random small talk. Ask them how's it going, you know, just random. If things get awkward, just tell her you have to go. You might mentally kick yourself, but at least you talked to her!
Anything really, just like when you talk to a male friends but cut out the perverted talk. Whatever is in your mind say it out, make her laugh, make her feel comfortable with you and she will open up to you, then you can talk more deeply about her/your life/love life etc.
If you have a class with her, talk about your class, like how was the test or do you like this teacher? If you're just talking about approaching a girl in any situation then see what she is wearing or what she is doing and ask her about it. For example, if she has a purse with the Beatles on it or shirt, you can approach her and say, "so you like the Beatles? " Anything she has that can be used to start a simple conversation. Just get that first message across and your confidence will rise.
