Go for it. Sometimes one has to exit the comfort zone and see what's beyond. It might seem weird but hey since you know each other you can skip the seeking common ground. Don't close doors before you are sure what's behind them.
Yeah it would be a great idea to at least see what happens if you date. You never know what could happen in life, he could be your perfect mate. If you guys do try dating and it does not work, at least you know that you have been best friends for a long time and you are more likely to work things out and still be best friends. If he says you should go out and he flirts with you, it is very likely that he likes you a lot. Sometimes in life life partners develop out of people who date that have been friends forever.
