Well, when I was the archetypal poor student, I managed to get a dozen long-stemmed roses for Valentine's Day for a girl I had liked for a fair bit, and never told.
With the help of a friend, I snuck them over to the bookstore she was in at the time, but, mere feet from her, ran into one of her roommates, who (of course) reacted quite loudly when she saw the roses, and pointed at me. Needless to say, I turned about eight shades of red when the girl turned around, though I did manage a "Happy Valentine's Day" as I gave her the flowers.
They were not the most numerous, nor the most expensive, but some of the most memorable. :)
