I'm getting pretty close to graduating soon, and I'm completely freaked out! I just don't know for sure what career to embark upon. I really want to just decide on something that gives me a decent income, that's in a big city, and gives me a sense of pride in what I do. Is there anyone that's think they've found their dream job? In general, how did people with careers know that they wanted to pursue them? Thanks for you insight in advance!
My dream job was to become an Air Force pilot but I'm a pacifist at heart so it didn't make sense for me to join the military just so that I can fly one of those awesome jets. I recently graduated with my Bachelor's in Information Technology this past March. I found that most jobs in my area are more after experience than how much school you have under your belt. So that part is working against me since I haven't had a stable job for the past 2 years. I also thought about continuing my education and getting a Master's but then I found out that if I stay in my hometown then I will be overqualified for any reasonable job close to my field or something related (the Economics in my hometown suck). Currently I'm just looking for any job that pays at least $30,000 a year but so far it looks like I'll be forced to settle with jobs that start a person with no experience and a Bachelor's at $25,000 or less. It sucks since I need great Medical Insurance during my current condition but that's another question.
Are you planning to go to college? If so, you might be able to get away with waiting a bit longer before you worry about this. Most regular 4 year schools don't make you choose a major up front and actually most have "core requirements" that all students have to fulfill, which is a lot of your standard math, english, science, etc. type stuff. So you can concentrate on those classes while you try to figure it out. Whether you go to college or not, you could try one of 2 career test. Most colleges offer them and they usually have books in the public libraries and what not. One type will evaluate you based on your skills. It will figure out what you are best at and what careers are most likely to line up with that. The other type focuses more on what you ENJOY than what you are good at. That will give you a list of jobs that are most likely to interest you. Better if you can find both and compare to see if you can find something that is on both lists. Another option is to look into the Myers-Briggs type indicator which is a personality test that can also give a lot of insight on what jobs might be best for you. I wish I had more advice. I graduated 11 years ago and I still have pretty much NO idea what I want to do with myself, lol. Also I swear I read somewhere that most people change careers (not jobs. entire careers) something like 7 times in their life. So even if you find what you love now, you may find it will change down the line anyway.
Oh yeah. another thing you can try is to consider what you want out of your job. Is money more important to you? What about travel? Do you like working with people? Children? Animals? Computers? Something else? Do you want a career that lets you set your own schedule or do you respond better to rules & limits? Does it matter to you what other people think of your career? Do you need something that has status? Do you care more about doing something that "gives back"? Do you like talking to groups of people or does it terrify you? What subjects or hobbies do you love and would like to do on a daily basis? What subjects or hobbies do you hate and want to avoid?
