I've decided to start asking questions that will challenge people to think and hopefully become more proactive.

So here we go.

Abortion. Should it be legal? Yes or No, and why. Your thoughts are welcome and encouraged.

I have no problem with Abortion. Most people use the popular phrase it's a woman's body and blah blah blah, and I agree with that. However. I think abortion benefits us in a lot of different ways that people will probably get really pissed off about.

I think Abortion is great because it allows unplanned pregnancies to be eliminated instead of forcing young unwed mothers to abandon education and take a nosedive into poverty.

I believe Abortion should always be an option to rape victims who would have to raise a child that was spawned from a terrible hateful act.

I feel Abortion should remain a freedom outside of the religious overtones that dictate our legislation and daily lives.

There are a few of my thoughts. Now it's your turn.

Update: The responses here have been amazing! I wanted to take a moment to thank each and everyone of you for your comments. I hope we are all learning something here in our exchange of ideas and beliefs. I have learned a lot from everyone's unique perspectives.    5 months ago

im for abortion being legal. If abortion wasn't legal then woman would go back to the times where they would actually perform illegal abortions using clothes hangers and differnt house hold items which would cause them lots of infections and even death. No woman who is in the state of mind who isn't ready for a child financially or emotionally should have to go that route of putting a clothes hanger in there vagina . IT is wonderful that we have that choice as a woman and it is are right there for it should be legal!

Think maybe if sex wasn't the primary goal with babies 13 to 25 who have no idea of the ramifications of what getting pregnant does to there lives.

Sex has just become everyday casual recreation. Read the comments on this site from girls 14 and up who are already sexually active. It's crazy.

Try bringing some morals back into our lives and abortions would also decrease dramatically

But really only one case; if you are raped and the pregnancy is a result of that then by all means have it done!
But then again it is a womens' chose to do what she believe is right for herself!

Abortion - I'm very for it. I think if someone has gotten raped and became pregnant, or a teen mom that can't afford to take care of a baby gets pregnant, then yes, abortion should most definitely be OKAY, and legal in every state in the USA! And I'll take a stand point for the Pro-Life team and say you could put the kid up for adoption or something, but that's a hastle, and it's normally not a good idea. Maybe I'm being biased in that aspect, but I remember my bus driver from high school took in 4 foster kids and only lived in a dinky trailer (not mobile home that looks nice either.) And she only did it for the government to give her money.

I don't understand how some people can say they are completely against abortion except for certain instances like rape. In my opinion, you are flip flopping on your stand. People say that abortion is wrong because it is killing a human life, so if this is how you feel, why would it be okay to "kill a human being" through abortion even if an act like rape did occur? No matter what the case, you are still "killing a human being."

I believe that it is a woman's choice whether to go through with an abortion or not. I do understand the side that you need to take responsibility for your own actions and if you are pregnant you should deal with it. I think either way, abortion or not, a woman is still taking responsibility for her actions. I'm sure most women who go through an abortion feel much guilt and are emotionally drained from the experience. It would be stressful and time consuming for a woman and either way I believe she is forced to take some form of responsibility either way. Abortion lives with a person permanently. I don't think a woman could forget.

Even if abortion would be outlawed, it is still going to take place as "back alley abortions." Just because something becomes illegal does not mean it is going to put an end to it. Look at all the people who do illegal drugs.

I know abortion is not a pleasant thing. I do not think that it is a good decision for a woman to make, but I do feel that abortion is a personal choice.

I have a lot of other thoughts on this, but I don't want some people to get too angry with me and I wasn't planning on making this very long.

Question Asker This is a great response. I like the idea you present of abortions becoming "black market" in lieu of their legality. Very interesting point. I wouldn't worry about making people angry. You have the right to express your views. Trust me. I piss people off all the time. It's not intentional. It's the proactice dialogue that I enjoy. When people become apathetic to an issue, that's when the real problems begin! - 5 months ago

My body, my baby, my decision. Women should be able to choose whether or not they can have an abortion. My mom got pregnant when she was 17, and she could have gotten an abortion, but she didn't. And that's fine. Personally, I'm terrified of being pregnant, and if I became pregnant without wanting to or if I wasn't married, I would certainly want the option of having an abortion.

And I forget what the statistics are, but only a low percentage of women actually get abortions because of pregnancies due to rape.

Question Asker Good stuff. I want your thoughts on this. Do you feel that abortion should hold the same value in the eyes of the public opinion as say, a condom or other contraceptives? Why or why not? - 5 months ago
Answerer Hm, I've never thought of it like that.
I think I would have to say no. People don't seem to think twice about condoms or the pill, and I mean, you just use them because you want to prevent pregnancy. It's not "taking a life", a fetus hasn't been created yet. Admittedly, both are preventing a life, but abortion takes it to the next level, seeing as you end the life that was already starting to live. I feel like it's hard to explain, but again, I don't feel that the two should be viewed equally. - 5 months ago

I would never have an abortion myself, but I'm not convinced that my choice is necessarily right for everyone. I wouldn't have used the phrasing "an option that embraces the concept of true freedom within America," but that's closer to what I feel than the other way. I don't like the idea of abortion, and I had a hard time remaining friends with a girl I knew who had one, but I'm just not comfortable in saying that everyone should feel the same way as me. I probably could be convinced that partial-birth abortion should be banned, and maybe any abortion that takes place after the fetus would be able to live outside the womb on it's own.

Question Asker You take a very interesting view on this subject. I would like your thoughts on this. If no abortions took place, how do you feel it would effect our consumption of renewable and non renewable resources? Also, If abortion is not a choice that embraces the concept of freedom? what would be your suggestion to amend that concept and why? you gave a great response and present a nice middle of the road ideology. - 5 months ago
Answerer Man, I don't know. I don't want to pretend like I have all the answers on this, I definitely don't.

On the renewable and non-renewable resource thing, I'd assume that any jump in the number of Americans would hurt that, right? I'd be okay with that if I was convinced it was the totally moral thing to do, like if I was 100% sure that it was the same as killing a human. I'm not though, and that makes it tough. - 5 months ago
Answerer Boy do they restrict your amount of characters on responses.

Anyway, on the freedom thing, I guess I don't think of it as an issue of freedom, I consider it an issue of right and wrong. If everyone thought that it was the same as killing a human, no one would be in favor of abortion. And if everyone thought it was merely birth control, only people with really restrictive religions would oppose it. And I'm stuck in the middle, feeling like I don't know what it is. - 5 months ago

I am VERY AGAINST abortion. It makes me upset to hear of girls getting abortions. It's like killing a human being. Above you mentioned that it's an option for rape victims, well so is adoption. I agree that yes, no woman would want to raise a child that she does not want but adoption gives the child a chance. Just because the father of this child was a wrong person doesn't give anyone the right to judge the child and kill it. The child can feel it when they are getting aborted. How can one think that the fetus in a woman is not human? Also, it's the woman's fault for not taking precautions before having sex, and if she can't handle raising the child then she should think about the consequences of not taking the precautions before hand. There is no excuse to have an abortion!

Question Asker Great response. I would like to take a moment to ask your thoughts on why abortion is not an acceptable for of birth control, when other birth control form indirectly will produce the same results. And how would no abortion affect our population and distribution of natural resources? your thoughts? - 5 months ago
Answerer Abortion is not an acceptable birth control because the egg has already been fertilized by the sperm and is a growing fetus inside the mother's womb. Other birth control such as condoms, the pill etc...is acceptable because they are methods taken before sex and then which no child is produced. Having no abortions wouldn't affect or population and natural resources because that's why other precautionary methods are taken before sex so instead of an abortion they use other birth control. - 5 months ago
gravygirl I'm okay with everything you said, except the part about how having no abortions wouldn't affect our population. That's certainly not true. There's about a million abortions in the US every year. That would definitely have some affect, even if some of the pregnancies were stopped by knowing that there was no possibility of legal abortion and therefore being more careful about birth control. - 5 months ago

Abortion should be illegal in a sense that it is murder. That's exactly how I see it. I think people who decide to have unprotected sex should be accountable for their doings. There are some valid reasons to why some people might find abortion to be okay (aka rape - as you have already mentioned or in serious medical terms). The fact that the unborn baby is actually an individual person does not permit the "mother" to claim the child as a "mistake" and take the easy way out - abortion . Needless to say, Why does everyone think "Rape" when they hear the word abortion? And while we try to protect the human race from any harm - the high built securities and claim ourselves to be civilized people - aborting your own child contradicts the moral we try to protect so hard. The excessive amounts of criminal laws therefore have no affect when women decide to kill their child. Lots of people bring out the point, that what if the women is not ready? What if she has no time or money to keep the child. Well, instead of going through the abusive power of abortion - why not allow the women to give birth and give the child a chance of adoption to a stable environment. On the more emotional level, how do you find the courage and heart to kill your own blood? If someone took the time to actually think about that - freedom isn't the only thing everyone thinks about, because there is a life at stake. If freedom is so important to those women trying to make the decision to abort - shouldn't one pointer freedom be held for the child? If we go back to the whole rape concept: Appalling experience can not be a persuasive and right motive to kill a non- defensive child. By aborting, its not only the child that we hurt, its the women as well. And in doing so, we can lose more than just one life.

If killing an unborn child is alright, then I suppose just because disabled people are disabled - we can kill them too. I guess therefore, its okay to kill poor and the unwanting population in the world today. This dilemma began to work in a circle where one statement being said contradicts another. It is not possible really to equate the right of choice and the right to life. Promiscuity has little to do with it, it is a human rights issue. Most women choose to abort because that solution exists regardless of whether or not they need it. Some women use abortion as a type of birth control. They sleep with men and do not use protection and think nothing of it to go to the clinic as many as five times in their life to have an abortion. Women tend to take on risks with abortion. For ex: Having an abortion always lessens your chances for having children later in life. On the same note, its important to remember that if killing a normal person is illegal, then killing an infant is no different.

At whole, I voted A. Feel free to disagree.

Question Asker I can see your points here, and the fact that your not apathetic to your cause is very respectable and admirable to me indeed. I would however like to pose this question to you. What makes abortion such a unacceptable method of birth control? And, why do we feel that people have to be held to a certain accountability for our sexual activity? every other species on earth does not follow this phenomenon. Your thoughts? - 5 months ago

I believe abortion should only be allowed in certain instances. For instance, your raped or something and become pregnant. Any other time, it was your responsibility to have safe sex and you obviously failed to do so. The only time its necessary to have unprotected sex is if your planning on conceiving, otherwise just practice safe sex.
Not all mistakes should be able to be undone.

I believe that Abortion should be ILLEGAL , but I can see how my answer MIGHT piss some people off. I know what the BIBLE says, ( regardless of how anyone else feels about it) but I also know that its ok for me to make my own decision. I never really feel comfortable with this question it brings out the worse in some and others just seem timid. I completely respect a woman's right to choose , but a lot of women ( lets be real here) ABUSE it simply because they know its there . For every action there is a reaction so to sit and say that someone's ''environment'' calls for them not to have to except FULL responsibility for a careless decision is banana's. Kid's don't ask to be born , but they surely don't ask to be aborted either. If you know you don't have the means to support a child USE PROTECTION , use the PILL , or refrain from sex altogether. However for some people NONE of the above choices are options so why should abortion be one ? I don't agree with ABORTION at all under no CIRCUMSTANCES, but I do believe that we all have to come to terms with our own decisions therefore its not my place to shove my beliefs down anyone Else's throat. I have known a couple girls from High School and even couple in my family that have chosen to have abortion's. One's family wouldn't allow her to have a child out of wedlock ,( or with someone of a different race) One wanted to be able to finish college , and one chose to have an abortion because she already had 4 KIDS ( keep in mind she had already aborted 3). I respect a person's right to choose , but when it comes to another life there's just no need for discussion.
