I would say that for men, it's relatively new. And for us, it's a bit different. In my opinion, it seems a little more subtle in certain ways. We see models, and we want to look like that. It's not so much about getting on plans or signing up for some sort of Jerry Craig male weight loss system, it's more about how there seems to be more of a demand for better looking guys.
I think the emphasis is a little different. We can't be skinny. We have to be BUFF! Women do work out to look better, yes, but generally I think the focus is more on the weight loss aspect. The men's focus isn't the weight loss so much as looking bigger and more buff. The idea of "manliness" has changed just a tad, I think. Instead of the good dad and the bread winner and all that, we have to add in a great body too.
I think because of the magazines we read, and all of the shows on tv (Top Model, Gossip Girl, etc) are showing us all of these women who are absolutely tiny. How many shows are out there that show guys in the same light?
I think if shows like this didn't exist, it would decrease the desire for women to be a certain size, and we would realise that we don't need to be so thin that we look sick to attract a mate.
I agree completely. All shows on tv show girls that are really tiny, and cause girls to be more harsh on how they want to look in order to feel happy. But I also think that girls that are skinny, look at these girls and lose too much weight. Because every girl is different, they cannot all be stick thin. All body types are different. - 2 months ago

Exactly. I know I'll never be stick thin, and I'm good with that. But I can be happy with myself, and work out, and tone up, and that's what I want. I may watch these shows, but I also know that the way those women look isn't necessarily normal. And it definitely isn't normal for all women. Like you said, everyone is different. We need to be happy with the way we are built, and if not, work on ways to improve it, but not make ourselves sick in the process. If that makes sense? - 2 months ago
I think it is actually probably about even. But men don;t care as much aout being thin as women do. You don't see men looking through magazines and seeing thin men and wanting to look exactly like them. But I think women natrally just want to look good, and put a lot of pride into their appearance. Women see other women in advertisement looking thin mor eoften than men see other men. So men don't feel as much pressure or worry to be thin. But women worry about their appearance more, and see more advertisements which makes them worry more. And I also think it doesn't help when they are around a guy and he is talking about how hot this actress is. It puts a false image of beauty into a woman's head. I know it does for me.
I'd say its about the same. Men want to be thin and muscular to attract women. While women want to be thin and fit in order to attract men, it just seems like a vicious circle to me. Then you have media pressuring people to be thin.
Currently it is almost fashionable for women to be plump. They don't seem to feel any societal pressure to stay slim. Even most very young women are way too big.men too, but I think men DO feel pressure to not look too overweight.
I don't know if I agree with that. If that were true, why do all the magazines have thin models that are gorgeous? If anything, I think women are really pressured to look a certain way (thin). It is not to look plump. If women were pressured to be plump, why don't I see celebrities in the magazines with the headline saying "Julia Roberts is getting way too fat. It is unhealthy!" - 2 months ago
That depends on culture. Mainstream white culture (no offense anyone) pressures women to be thin, but in the black community for example if you're too skinny that can be a bad thing especially in certain places...they don't want you to be fat but more curvy and thick. - 2 months ago
