Not sure. I just know that's how it works. Mayweather isn't going to fight Martinez, guy is just too big.
  • Answerer
Yeah you're right. I remember Gatti fought this guy I can't remember his name exactly. I think it was Joey Gamachi or something like that and Gatti put on like 17 lbs. The size difference was ridiculous. Why don't they just do the weigh in the day of the fight, like they used to?
  • Question Asker
anywhere from 5-15 pounds of water weight back on within reason by fight time if they do it right. Martinez would easily have 10 pounds on Mayweather by the time of the fight. Mayweather would have to put weight on just to hit the 154 limit night of the fight, Martinez would just get it back in water weight. Consider how much weight mayweather has already put on, and how he did against Cotto. No, it would be a bad move, and he knows it.
  • Question Asker
I don't think Floyd would do it and I don't think he should do it. I mean, keep in mind, he was originally a 130lbs fighter. I think he's hit his stride in the mid 140's. Going up to the mid 150's I think would be a mistake on his part. Martinez could come down to 154 at the official weigh in, but think about how much weight he will put on the next day. I bet he would pop back up to well over 160lbs fight night. Official weigh ins they tend to lose water weight. If they do it right they can put
  • Answerer
True. Let me ask you something. Do you think Floyd would have the guts to fight Sergio Martinez at a catch weight say 154? I mean Martinez insists he can make 154 easily, he has even said he doesn't consider himself a full fledged middleweight, even though he has has amazing success there.
  • Question Asker
Yeah, the argument not to fight Floyd again is there, but money might say otherwise. Marquez is now officially the number 2 P4P fighter behind Mayweather. People are going to call for it like the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight, even more so now that Marquez knocked Pac out.
  • Answerer
Your definitely right about the weight. Marquez is now a full fledged welterweight. I just picture Mayweather being very careful using his speed and reflexes. I also wonder at this point if Marquez is going to start looking out for his legacy. I understand beating Floyd would cement it further, but another lose particularly another bad loss could hurt that. Just my opinion I think styles make fights and I just think Floyd is all wrong for him.
  • Question Asker
new size and fitness. He was throwing much harder than I've ever seen from him, and he was a guy who could already produce knockouts. Still, I think Mayweather fights Bradley next. That's what Roger Mayweather said is the best move and Floyd tends to listen to him. I think it's in Marquez best interest financially to fight somebody other than Pacquiao, but Arum is both fighters promoters so he might convince otherwise.
  • Question Asker
As much as I'd like to see a Mayweather vs Marquez 2, you're almost definitely right. Marquez is a counter puncher, Mayweather is better at it. However, back when Marquez fought Mayweather, it was his first time at such a weight class. He had just a year prior fought at 130lbs where Mayweather had been fighting at 147 for like 3 years at that point. The limit was suppose to be 144, but Mayweather came in at 146, Marquez 142 so it could go much different this time around considering Marquez
  • Answerer
I guess a possibility would be Timothy Bradley next and then a rematch with Manny.
  • Answerer
I enjoyed the fights between Gatti and Ward, but with all do respect I considered them mid-level fighters. For two guys at that level to go at it like that was special. Marquez is 37 or 38 and if wants to cash in he probably doesn't have much time. Some people have mentioned Canelo Alverez, but I think he is to big. A second Mayweather fight, I think the result would be similar to the first one. Marquez is at his best with someone coming at him so he can counter punch. Floyd won't do that.

EXACTLY! I said the same thing in those last couple rounds1! They went to war and some.
  • Answerer

I think there is a good chance they will fight a 5th time. Which is amazing. The 4th fight kind of reminded me of the Hagler-Hearns fight. Two top level guys just saying screw it.

Why does it always have to be a race thing? Can we just enjoy the sport and the athlete's ability rather than their race. I think people who think that way are ignorant and uneducated...

lol anon girl it's like in olympic games you take pride if your country wins XD
    • 6 months ago
It's not specifically race, not the color of your skin or hair, it's more about the national pride.
We have nothing against Philippians, some of my best friends are Phillipino, even some of my aunts (who are Mexican) were on Manny's side. In any other fight I would be on Pacquiaos side 100% but I like Emmanuel as well and well my national pride beckons me to his side

I wanted Pacquiao to win. He just seems so humble and nice, but Marquez definitely deserved it. I'm not going to lie it scared me when he got K.O.ed and I did tear up a little when I saw his wife frantically trying to get to him. What a horrible postion to be in :/

I AM SO HAPPY. Just thought I'd start with that. Such a great fight. Marquez did something many doubted was possible and shut Pacquiao up... At least for now. I was jumping around when that hit landed and you just see the pac man drop. Man am I still so thrilled. Viva Mexico!

I am really sad that Pacquiao lost, he's a very good boxer and a respectable one, but he can never always win, that's what a game is, sometimes you lost sometimes you win. But I am still a fan of him even though he lost. Anyway I am happy for Marquez, I know he deserves it.

Very entertaining fight. I am certainly hoping for a 5th. Marquez just has a style that is kryptonite for Pacquiao. Counter-punchers love fighting opponents with limited defensive skills who leave openings by being sloppy technically. Pacquiao has improved in a lot of ways, as his head movement during most of the fight demonstrated, but it obviously was not enough. When Marquez fought Mayweather he got embarrassed because he had much slower hand speed and Floyd does not make the mistakes that Pacquiao does.

    Yes, a couple.

    1. Before Marquez delivered the knockout punch, it was a very good fight. Both sides delivered and took big blows, very entertaining and overall a close fight.

    2. Marquez definitely established himself as a big player last night.

    3. People are usually for the underdog. If Marquez lost, he would've been commended for putting up a good fight rather than being made fun of for being knocked out cold.

That was such a different Pacquiao. Before he would be aggressive and careful. That fight, he just looked aggressive and not very careful. He was use to taking so much punishment from bigger guys but he didn't even protect himself for much of the fight.

I still think he would beat Mayweather though. Marquez has always given Pacquiao fits.

Manny made a crucial error. He didn't have both hands up to his mouth level to defend himself from a punch or counter punch, and as a result, he walked into a right power punch. That's almost like walking into an ambush. It's is extremely difficult to overcome.
