Why would he just give up?

Hmm, one possible reason is that he's just easy to break on a relationship, I don't think it has much to do with you or other things. It could be that he has another girl in mind, and this is his way of saying to you to go away, he might need more space, or he doesn't like all the fighting with you, and think that after a break, you guys would be back fine and dandy.
