How do you feel when someone rates your answer down without making a comment? Does it irritate you or do you not care?

I am asking because I have seen some questions where answers have all received a down-rating without a comment or any obvious reason for the vote. And many of these answers were long, detailed, and helpful, so it didn't make any sense for me for someone to come along and criticize without comment.

Yes it definitely gets me annoyed jeez at least tell me the reason why you disagree with me - don't leave it blank - please say something that just irritates me - its over the net anyway and people really don't know who you are so yes most definitely give me a reason of why you choose to disagree with me.

I really hate that. Its really annoying. I've seen it happen when people choose to be offended by things that really shouldn't be offensive. Like your answer to that abortion question a few weeks ago, I thought it was a great answer, but people decided to be offended by it because it had the word 'god(s)' in it. That was just silly of them.

Question Asker I know - I felt the boot marks of people stepping on me! - 4 months ago
deadwait Ya, its almost stupid sometimes - I have one answer that has 5 ups and 5 downs - and no freaking comments - I'm not surprised though - typing takes more effort then just clicking a button -_^ - 4 months ago
Question Asker And in looking at your answers deadwait, they are often mixed with advice and comments that might offend some. Personally I find them hilarious, but it's not clear where the disagreement is - is it the advice, the jokes, the irony? - 3 months ago
Answerer Haha, what's with the 5 down ratings on this answer? XD - 3 months ago

The only times I've seen this is when the answer has do deal with religion or politics. No matter how hard I try to give a eloquent, helpful answer some people just disagree for no given reason whatsoever.

This irritates me. Instead of presenting a counter-argument or engaging in intellectual debate, they just peg you with a down-mod and scurry away to hide under their rock.

I'm getting irritated just thinking about it >.<

In the spirit of advice, that's why we're here, right; anyways here's my example:

Say person X takes a test, and when he gets it back, he never corrected the wrong ones and when it comes time to take the final exam - he Fails that too, because he never had the answer in the first place. And what if he told someone else the wrong answer too, and all one person is doing is spreading bad information - now that's a bad chain reaction. No matter how you look a it.

And I've seen answers where I wasn't sure if the person offended someone or was just wrong; all someone did was disagree.

Answerer See click away and spread the ignorance . And I hope that people who click and don't provide reasons why realize that when they actually ask for advice - the bad advice they didn't like could show up again, without anyone even being aware in the first place . And not preventing a problem . And wasting people's time and energy in the first place . - 3 months ago
Answerer It a sign of common courtesy, to prevent and help out another, and ignorance for proving someone wrong without explanation, and not having the right understanding of preventing a problem . Leaving curiosity to get the better of people usually . - 3 months ago

Nope.

I'd be like "oooh. Ouch. What's up with that? " But other than that. It wouldn't consume me.

There are times when I don't agree with the poster, but don't feel passionately enough about the issue to write a response. Of course, I rarely give someone a negative rating, unless it's mean spirited; extremely unfair, racist, sexist, etc.

Other than that, if I don't agree, and I feel like giving a negative response, I'll usually say something about why they got the rating.

I also think that as long as I had more positive responses, then there's no big issue. They just didn't agree, but didn't feel like bringing it up.

Answerer Oh, and I did recognize the comedy potential in here that someone would give everyone a bad rating, since we're talking about giving bad ratings and what we would do if we got one without explanation .

I'm not completely devoid of a sense of humor and or irony .

I've seen a lot of agreements without comment as well. What's the difference? I'm happy you have agreed with me so, no comment required. OR, waddayamean you disagree with me.

It's probably easier to just disagree without comment because an argumentative banter just starts up with both sides thinking they're right. And neither being able to convince the other of their point of view.

If someone down rates me, I'm more curious as to why.

Although the limitation of characters does limit my incentive to explaining why I disagree. I can't formulate a cohesive argument in two sentences. So I just carry on.

Question Asker I know what you mean - it can be hard to formulate a complete thought in limited characters. I think the field has gotten larger, though, recently because I've noticed I can type in what I'm trying to say. It doesn't necessarily make my thinking more correct or worth reading, but it is at least longer. - 4 months ago

I believe it is ok for them to do so. They are making a choice to agree or disagree. I usually take it as though they see it the opposite way.

Doesn't bother me but I did notice that the everyone got down rated in the "bitch" thread which I found rather amusing.

Makes you wonder whether some people really want to know your opinion or they just want people to confirm their beliefs.

At the end of the day, all we can do is state our opinion and thoughts and others can take it at face value or disagree with us. A comment would be nice on a downgrade as it could lead to an interesting conversation and exchange of knowledge/thoughts but I also respect that a few individuals prefer to to remain silent.

I would say it is a little annoying but you can't really do anything about it. I might disagree with something and not leave a comment on everyones profile but there's a comment on the page somewhere. The abortion topic got me a little worked up now I'm starting to cool down.

Question Asker That's a topic that gets everyone worked up. There are few topics that weave together more disparate, conflicting elements of our laws and morals than that one. - 4 months ago
