How do you know when a guy is about to break up with you?

I think the biggest one is emotionally drained that was definitely me my ex was always giving me this crap that she still loved her ex and she was eventually going to hurt me so I told her that we needed a break because I can't do this everyday

There are many signs and each one is unique to the guy you are dating and his personal situation with you.
Withdrawl from your emotional life or a change in something as simple as his vocal tone towards you.
If he is wanting to break up with you, then he is probably planning how to do it, especially if you've been going out a long time.
Dont get carried away though, not everything is a sign of a pending break-up.

I just think that you shouldnt really be thinking about what someone looks like when they are about to breakup with you. Doesn't really set a good tone for the relationship if you ask me.

But if you are asking what are the signs that a guy isn't interested in you anymore or is about to breakup with you, I guess there are a couple of things that I could point out.

1) He doesn't call you as frequently or at much at all.

2) Seems to be diverting his energies elsewhere

3) Is emotionally dead. Repressed and doesn't want to argue with you anymore

4) Basically gives you very little attention.

Most of the times its very obvious when a guy isn't that into you anymore. The hardest part is actually accepting that he isn't.
