Marriage is a mutual decision. And its still more likely for the man to ask the woman to marry. That has more to do with our ideas and expectation about marriage as a couple and the reality of our capability as individuals. Being committed to someone for the duration of one's life is huge. In most marriages, the couple doesn't realize what they have gotten into until it becomes a situation where they are staying together for the kids. With our taboos on sexuality our societal views about marriage, its not a surprise that people don't stick around forever. And with the knowledge of 6 billion other mofos in the word, who doesn't have a second thought. That doesn't even include the emotional cheating that goes on all the time in marriages and in relationships. But then again, the structure of marriage was created before the couple bound themselves to it. They know the rules, they should assimilate, or find a different alternative that compromises their ideas while sharing their love.
There's your answer to how bullsh*t marriage is in today's society. Back in the days it's for life, for financial reasons and also that people don't live as long.
But I don't believe guys are twice as likely to cheat on girls: it's both the same. Guys have a bigger sexual appetite, yes, but girls are just as likely to cheat when they know they are attractive themselves.
