A week is a little long, lots of bacteria in there by then. Wash your hands after handling them and don't touch your face especially by your eyes or mouth until you've cleaned your hands. That should keep you from getting sick. I think its an odd thing, but to each his own.

After a week it will probably smell like piss and period. That turns you on? Well okay cool. That's not sanitary though, bacteria like dark and moist places, and grow rapidly in a week.
