Will a language barrier prevent a relationship?

There was an exchange student from Puerto Rico at my high school senior year, and he had a wonderful relationship with a girl in our Spanish class. He barely spoke any English at all, but his American girlfriend had a decent knowledge of Spanish (though nowhere near fluency), and they were teaching each other so they could communicate better. It was adorable. :) Relationships with language barriers can work, but communication is important in any relationship, so try learning each other's language. It's not only a great way to bond, but it will help you understand each other better.

Until then, though, non verbals, body language, and a few basics will get you a long way. :)

Absolutely. There is no reason why one or both individuals can't learn another language, especially basics so you can communicate with each other. So much can be said with body language and eye contact, that I think it could work in the beginning. Either that, or hire a translator to help you out. This reminds me of that movie Love Actually, where the guy learned Portuguese so he could go propose to the woman he loved. And she learned English "just in cases. " Yeah, that was pretty lame of me! :-)
