You can respect him for the fact that he is letting you go. He is confused so he may not be able to put the words together correctly. And because he is confused he is in a defensive mode.

I've been told this a few times before and it was usually part of a break up and I took it about as well as most people take its not you its me! It could mean many things. In my case the guy was a cheater and a liar who was unable to commit. IT could mean that, it could mean he's just insecure? No way to tell for sure just based on this info.
