Should I trust a guy that buys me expensive gifts?

I guess there are people that think love is buying an expensive gift. It's sad but true. My ex-girlfriend always use to buy me expensive things and I was like "what do I need a TUMI manpurse for?" It always had to be named brand clothes and other named brand items.

All I really would have loved was for her to give me an unexpected hug or kiss every once in awhile. The saddest part about the whole thing was she expected expensive things in return. I dated her for 6 years and never proposed to her. The reason I didn't propose was not because I didn't want to but, because I was not able to afford the huge diamond ring she wanted. I even asked her one time if we could get married now with a smaller ring or wait 3 more years and get a larger ring what would you like? The answer I wanted to hear was I would get married to you if you gave me a piece of string to wrap around my finger. Unfortunately, she told me she would rather wait 3 more years and get the bigger ring.

This really turned me off to buying her things and spending money on her. I mean I loved to do romantic and nice things for her but, after knowing someones idea of love is 'how big is the diamond' well it kind of turns you off to love all together.

I honestly think you should try to find someone who expresses love the way you like loved to be expressed. You will probably be a happier person.

More likely than not, he really cares about you.

The real question here isn't whether hell stick with you "eternally" (most likely he wants to.), but you should rather ask yourself if YOU are willing to help him grow as a person, the other option would be finding someone who's a bit more mature and less insecure.

Just like everyone else who'll read your question, I don't know the guy. In my experience, people who buy awkwardly-expensive gifts for their girlfriends are very controlling and insecure. Again, that in itself can be a bad or a good thing depending on the individual. As long as you're willing to take the risk of staying with him, try getting HIM cheap but thoughtful gifts on special occasions. That'll be the real test, see how he reacts and you'll have your answer.
