An awful smell or discharge may mean you have some health issues and you should see a doctor. Other then that, I have to say that no one bothered to say that it is perfectly normal to have a scent in your genital area. Men and women both do have a certain scent, not to be confused with an odor which would be a bad smell. And yes good hygiene is vital not only to make that area more appealing but for good health as well, but some smell is normal.
