My sis has done 3 operations this week and she needs blood.
I know its pretty selfish to think about this right now but if I test for blood donating, will it show if I have any kind of STDs?
My parents will literally KILL me if this happens they re conservative and they don't even know that am sexually active.
Ive never done the STD test but am just worried ...would it show if I do by any chance?!? should I go and test alone for it and ask the nurse to keep it confidential? will that work?
Update: P.S I haven't had sex in 2 and half years.

These are the diseases which are tested by Canadian and American Blood donation clinics:
*HIV-1 and HIV-2* HTLV-I and HTLV-II *Hepatitis C virus* Hepatitis B virus West Nile virus Minipool nucleic acid testing Targeted individual donation testing Identification of viremic donors *Syphilis* Cytomegalovirus Chagas' disease
I have * those diseases that I know that can be sexually transmitted. As for patient doctor confidentiality, you can let your doctor know of your concerns (you don't have to tell them why, just till him/her that you don't want anyone knowing the results of the blood screening) and he is obligated to let *certain* people about your results.
There is a *caveat* that I do want you to understand though. I only know this to be true in the Canadian medical system and I'm just assuming that you're not, but here, Public Health is required to contact those whom you've been sexually active to let them know that they should get tested. They won't say who it was, but this gives you an idea that it is not completely confidential, but as far as your parents not finding out, you probably are safe.
That being said, I would understand how you would feel about having a little guilt for thinking that it is selfish, but I think that when the smoke has settled you will realize it was something that you were proud to do because you helped your sister despite the consequences to you.
Oh, and one other caveat I should mention. In the States, the test results may affect your future ability to secure a medical insurance policy should something come back positive. It is really important you consider this.
Update: P.S I haven't had sex in 2 and half years. " Then the test will be trustworthy. Just ask for confidentiality to be sure but the doctor will smile: for a doctor confidentiality is the logical and normal way of handling patients' files.
Thank you so much I will inform it once this trauma is done. If you guys don't hear from me, well perhaps it did happen and I'll be dead so pray for me too haha - 26 days ago
1. You are not a whore - it is very common for people to be sexually active and there's nothing wrong with who you are. 2. You don't have time to worry about what family will think of you, you could save your sisters life if you have the same blood type
Go in, give some blood- if they look at you funny or say sh*t about you having an STD - look back at them and say "we will discuss this later, right now I need to find a way to save my sister's life."
3 operations obviously means something is wrong. Let's stop worrying about reactions and find a way to fix what's happening. A life is more important than thoughts or feelings
I know am not a whore but they would think so...I do care about what they think and my worst fear is that I do test positive in anything, they wouldn't talk to me anymore and id be in an awkward place. - 26 days ago
Answerer
I understand that you care about what they think- but think about how many people you have slept with. Now divide that into the population... That would be a rough guess on the chance that you have an STD.
For me, that is .00000000005% ... Take a risk, I doubt your blood family will disown you for it. If they do anything, they will be upset that you have been promiscuous and feel upset for about 2 weeks. After that, you will be right back to where you are now. - 26 days ago
Question Asker
My number is actually 3- guys! and no they wouldn't let it go in two weeks... say 2 years? - 26 days ago
Answerer
3 guys = very rare chance you have an STD - I understand your cultural values for not being promiscuous - btw you have very good english. If you have the time, take the test - if you don't have the time - donate the blood. This is very simple. If you are too worried about donating, then don't donate- there are other "blood bags" that the hospital can use to save your sisters life, even the most complicated blood type.
There are 6.4 billion people in this world, there is another source for her - 26 days ago
Question Asker
3 guys is very rare but possible..they actually just baught her a blood unit cause they needed it today, that's why the family members are testing so they could donate and am scared sh*tless, I actually fainted in the hospital and they all thought that I did because I saw blood..lol its because am freaking ooouuuttt people! oh thanks about the english part..i try my best. - 26 days ago
Middle East, good English, a spirited girl? I'd guess Lebanon or Egypt :) - 26 days ago
Answerer
No need to stress, see- they already drew the blood.. It is confidential if they send you a letter. Just make sure to check the mail, I doubt you will receive a notification, like I said 3 men? Pshh that's nothing. - 26 days ago
Question Asker
Lebanon or egypt..mmm not really but close enough.. - 26 days ago
"should I go and test alone for it and ask the nurse to keep it confidential?"
Yes. You should have, long ago.
But what you really need to do is divorce your parents from your sex life. It's not their business anymore.
P.S.: Yes, they test, and yes, it shows. From what I hear, you'll get a discreet letter on why your blood was rejected, and a recommendation that you see a doctor. I hope you open your own mail.
As far as I know, blood donations are mixed (same blood group, same rhesus factor together) and then whole batches are tested and thrown away if anything shows That's the way they told me it 's done in Europe: testing each donation separately would be much more expensive than throwing away whole batches of infected blood, because in Europe donors aren't paid: the blood material thus is for free to the clinics, but the cost of collecting, conditioning and testing is high. I don't know if this applies to the US too, but it seems pure logic.
1. If you've a valid reason worried about something showing up on a blood test, get one asap! The results are 100% confidential. 2. There's not only HIV, look at this: link and at this: link
By avoiding a test you're just putting your head in the sand, ostrich like: link
I correct myself: If you've a valid reason TO BE worried about something showing up on a blood test, .... sorry, mistake. - 26 days ago
Answerer
You seem to think that the blood you are donating will be given ONLY and directly to your sister. This might be the case if you both had a very specific blood composition. (in Europe it would be mixed with other blood donations and used to 'refill the stocks' your sister 'used', but that may be done in an other way in US hospitals) - 26 days ago
Question Asker
No they want my blood cause it is very specific.. I will have to tets for it then if its good enough or whatever I will donate in few days - 26 days ago
Thats best. Set up an appointment and maybe when your there take a urine sample too. The basic blood test only shows many stds while urine can show some traces if anything else could be wrong. - 26 days ago
Answerer
They will test, be sure about it. They may do what's roughly described as "boiling the blood"(to destroy some STI's) since your blood composition is very specific. Trust the doctors. - 26 days ago
Go test it alone and if you have a std at least you tried. Its better to know instead of worrying and stressing about this topic. Your young and prob pretty. Try to live it without worrying over these matters. ^.^
The problem is that if you have an STD, you could give it to your sister. So doctors will always check your blood before they put it in someone else.
If you don't want your parents to find out, talk to the nurse privately. She's not allowed to tell anyone, including your parents about the results of your test, but your parents may be told that you can't give blood if you have an STD. They won't tell your parents that you have an STD, just that you can't give blood. It may put you in an awkward position.
I know they wouldn't give it to my sister unless they check it first. I don't wanna be in an awkward position, so if they say I can't donate blood what am I suppose to say? why can't i?? any other reason other than an STD?
I have psoriasis and I wanted to donate long time ago they told me that I can't cause if the psoriasis. will that work? my mother has it too and she is going to donate as well. - 26 days ago
Answerer
If you have time and you're really concerned, why don't you have an STD check somewhere else without your parents knowledge?
In relation to psoriasis, a person with it can give blood if; (a) they have no local lesions in their arms AND (b) they have not taken oral retinoid drugs to treat it, specifically Soriatane (acitretin). If you have taken this drug in the last 3 years you cannot give blood. - 26 days ago
They will screen for HIV, Hep B, Hep C, etc. If you had more time, you could go get tested before you show up to donate. Of course, if you DO have something, better to know sooner and get treated than let something go.
I have to do this by tomorrow and the test will take 3 days untill I can actually get the restults. if I had more time I would just get an STD test and treat it if I have one but I just don't want my family to think that am a whore and kill me.... it would be such an embarssment..my sister is sick and am a whore!!! - 26 days ago
Answerer
I'd suck it up and go donate. You are worrying about the possibility of having something. - 26 days ago
Question Asker
Well you say that you'd suck up cause you haven't met my family.. they re all extremely religious and conservative... plus we live in the middle east! Get the point? - 26 days ago
"If you had more time" Anyhow, since HIV incubation is about 3 months,a test will only show if one had HIV 3 months ago, not if one got infected last week. - 26 days ago
If you live in the middle east, then the situation will/might be completely different from Europe or the US. Ask your doctor: he will know (and keep the secret, if any) - 26 days ago
Question Asker
I haven't had sex in 2 and a half years anyway! does this matter? - 26 days ago
Answerer
Sounds like you have two choices: 1. Donate and run the risk of an STD being made known. 2. Don't donate and make some excuse to your family and sister why you didn't.
Your call. - 26 days ago
Answerer
Here in the US, even if you have had any of the things they screen for a long time ago, they won't let you donate ever. You may have had hepatitis or west nile and never known it. - 26 days ago
Question Asker
Thats my question. what excuse could I tell my family if I couldnt.. I don't wanna jinx myself but what if this happens .. I will go alone for sure. but what excuses should I make about why I couldnt? - 26 days ago
I'm sorry but I went to the doctors and they told me my blood wasn't good, if you don't have albie then ask the doctor what to say or do. They know what to do due to the fact they have cases like this every day. I hope this helps - 26 days ago
There is a long list of reasons people can't give blood: any of the conditions they screen for, low blood pressure, pulse problems, skin piercing or tattoo within 12 months, cancer, are or have been pregnant in the past 6 weeks, recently had malaria, have a cold or flu... - 26 days ago

Here in the US there are privacy laws that prevent your results from being officially passed around. What is your confidence level in the trust of the people who will be processing your donation? - 26 days ago

If you are taking some medication for psoriasis, they may not be able to use it. They may be less restrictive on the typical rules since it is going to a family member, not into the general blood supply though. http://www.mayoclinic.org/donate-blood-rst/prohibited-donation-meds.html - 26 days ago

Question Asker
For the psoriasis , its actually a cream but its a very rare kind of psoriasis and I don't have it anymore or lets say for the time being since it never heals. - 26 days ago
yeah 100% positive that the test would come up with a STD if you have one. It will work if you want it confidential. No need to be scared, your intentions are pure just test your blood and go with the flow from there.
So should I go and test it first alone? if I do have an std (hopefully not) what can I tell my family, why can't I donate as well? am freaking out I have to this by tomorrow!! - 26 days ago
I don't think think you would have time to get another blood tests back for STD's in the span of one day. They will test for it in drawing blood for a transfusion... If you feel anxious about it then ask to go back alone so you can talk to the doctor/nurse drawing the blood and ease your mind a little. Standard blood tests given by doctors do not always test for STDs (Most often they don't unless specifically asked), transfusion though they definitely will. - 26 days ago
Answerer
Not when the red cross or any operation. Hosipitals can tell you in less than a day due to the fact they test it right there and then. While doctors in their own offices send it to labs. - 26 days ago
Doctors can do the HIV test and have the results pretty fast, but the result will relate to HIV positive or negative 3 MONTHS BEFORE, not HIV+ or - TODAY. - 26 days ago
Question Asker
I didn't get that am sorry. what do you mean by 3 months before? - 26 days ago
Answerer
Hiv is a big thing, nothing to joke about but in all fairness. The chances are slim. She should go to a hospital request a blood test for chron's/ stds/ and what they can consider, and get it over with. Can't say suck it up because its a big step to find out something important. Need to pace your self or your going to end up with a lot of wrinkles - 26 days ago
When you donate blood, YES, they will run all kinds of tests on it, including for STDs and STIs, it's all routine. I donate plasma on a regular basis, not whole blood, but the process is very similar and all the same precautions are taken. In the screening process, when they prick your finger and take a tiny blood sample, that will be to test your protein and iron levels to make sure your blood is 'generally' fit to donate. Along with taking your blood pressure/pulse, weight, and they'll ask you a bunch of questions. If any of those things are too high or low, they'll defer you from donating that day. That sample is not an adequate amount of blood to do -serious- testing. Every donation is thoroughly tested. If the blood is infected in ANY way that is transmittable, they'll toss it out. There is no way they would let tainted blood be used in a transfusion for your sister or anyone else. I'm not sure if they mix donations of the same blood group in America [I'm assuming you're American, sorry] like Jacquesvol says they do in Europe, because I've never asked, but the outcome is the same. If it's no good, they'll toss it. I understand that you're worried about your parents freaking out on you, but I wouldn't worry about them if your sister's health is at stake. You're an adult. I know your parents are conservative and would likely have some not-so-nice things to say about you being sexually active, but it's none of their business. You're old enough that they need to butt out of your personal life, and you're well within your rights to tell them so. If you're an adult and the lab finds something wrong with your blood, they legally can't tell your parents unless you give them permission to. There's a confidentiality policy between doctor and 'patient'. A doctor will discuss it with you privately, or call/send a letter telling you to come back in to discuss any abnormal results. If there's nothing wrong with your blood and the donation went well, they won't have reason to contact you. But if it makes you feel better to specifically ask the doctor for absolute confidentiality, by all means do so. I hope that helps you out a little bit. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me and I'll answer them to the best of my knowledge. =]
I know am an adult and old enough to make my own decisions, but they wouldn't understand that, either id be killed or they would not talk to me ever. I want neither of these things to happen. Plus think of the awkward situation, my daughter has an STD so she can't donate..talk about reputation.. am not american I just said earlier that I live in the middle east so They re pretty conservative and religious....!! Are the results confidential in the middle east as well ? I don't think so! - 26 days ago
Answerer
I'm so sorry, I must have missed before where you said you live in the Middle East. It never would have occurred to me, because your English is very good. So I'm sorry to assume that about you. I wish I knew how better to help you, but I know very little about health practices and laws in the Middle East. All I can really offer is my hope that everything will work out for you and your family and that the process goes smoothly. - 25 days ago
Question Asker
Its okay, no biggie! I hope everything will be fine and my sis will get better asap. and thanks for the english part haha - 25 days ago
I know that but they will check it first anyway - 26 days ago
Answerer
Yes, but like the other answerer said, they test it in batches, and therefore if you let them mix your infected blood with other blood, you would be allowing them to waste a lot of perfectly good blood. - 26 days ago
Question Asker
They wouldn't let me donate if my test wasent good enough!!! they re doctors they know thier job and that they can't do that unless they re sure!!! - 26 days ago
Answerer
They test your blood after it's out of you and mixed with a bunch of other people's blood. Your blood could contaminate all the other donations if you let them take it without telling them that you may have an std. - 26 days ago

omg please do not even be selfish like that. give blood -- your sister's illness is a lot more important than whatever trouble you think you're gonna get into by your parents. also they won't tell them anyway because of patient confidentiality reasons
I gave blood when I was in high school and I had to fill out a bunch of forms. There were questions about STDs. They won't accept blood from someone who has one.
You should have a test done. Go to your Gynecologist. The nurses and doctors aren't allowed to tell anyone---Patient/Doctor Confidentiality.
