The first time I had sex with my guy I was on the rag. It didn't gross me out to have sex with him the, and he didn't mind. He even went down on me!! I am always horny around my period. If you didn't want to have sex,use toys,or your fingers to pleasure her.
If you think its disgusting, then don't do it. Its not for everyone, and she would need to respect that. You don't want to end up repulsed by her, which it could lead to.
As for if you do it, it is messy and if you are unsure of any STD's I would certainly use a raincoat. Probably best to use a towel or something under her as well.
As for what -Rune said, yep, safe if you're both clean disease wise but just cos she's menstruating doesn't mean she can't get pregnant so if you want to avoid that, definitely use a condom.
As for the "some blood". Just a word of caution, at times it could be more like quite a lot of blood, but that varies between women.
Why would it be disgusting? Many ancient societies looked at the menstrual period as being one of a womens most powerful times. Sexually she can be very powerful and you can gain the benefit of that.
My biggest problem with it is that it can create a big mess and stain sheets. Definitely use a towel, but I would suggest reevaluating your stance on it. Many women are already ashamed enough around their genitalia. For me I honor what women are and have to go through and never hesitate. I look at it as an honor and I used to feel the same way as you before I learned more about it.
Women are actually the horniest when they are on their period. As long as you are both clean (disease-wise) and you wear a condom, there is not much danger involved at all. Menstruation blood is a normal body fluid, after all.
Be aware that there is a good chance that there will be some blood coming out of her, so it's a good idea to have a towel or something under you and her, to catch any that drips out.
