The girl I'm with usually says something about it like "wow your heart's beating really fast" I'm not sure if they're teasing me, if it's unusual, or what

Breathing faster and a pounding heart is a good thing. It means your excited in a good way next time tell the girl your just "really excited " to be with her, she'll probably take it as a compliment.
