The same reason women deny it. It is an embarrassing topic. I denied it to my ex girlfriend when she found my porn mags! She asked me what do I do with them. I said, I look at the pictures. I guess people can think you are a perv.

Just thinking about the topic seems childish, which might be a big part of the reason why some older guys would deny it. As a young kid its probably to most fun you could have by yourself, and depending on the company, it may also be an enjoyable joint venture. I mean think about how different age groups would respond to the question. We got the standard Men that know its understood they guy do it, and the Young Men that almost brag about it.

A guy gets to the point when, probably around the rebelling age, that he really doesn't give a damn about what people think. The time when what's bad and good reverse roles. When he becomes an adult, he becomes what he determined a proper adult should be. An image based on those he knew and the various positive role models he had. What isn't included in the ideal man that a guy what's to be one day, are the traits that are too closely associated with being a kid.

At this point you might be able to exclude social awkwardness if only based on the countless movies and shows that rely on penis jokes and spanking monkeys, because people tend to not really give a damn and just think its funny.

Something that may have been socially hot-wired into us are the double standards of men and women. The whole women making babies and needing to be picky about their partners so that they don't waste their limited number of eggs, and the men needing to share their genetic information to all who happen to receive it, all for the sake of continuing existence. Excessive rubbing of the fireman to put out the flames could be thought of as a waste, taking away from a man contribution to the gene pool. Instead, he should be bettering himself to make him a more preferable mate.

My thoughts are running around about more than what I'm managing to write, but this is my general answer: It's similar to how to a rich upper echelon type of person wouldn't admit to eating in a fast food restaurant. A guy look down on himself on satisfying another basic need with such readily available means.

Most normal guys in committed relationships will deny masterbating to there significant other to save themselves humiliation. We hate nothing more than a negative reaction or a fight with or lover.

Cause girls think it's weird that guys jack off, and act weird about it when we admit it, and think less of us for it even though we're just being honest so we deny it.

If you start off asking the dude in a way to really make him comfortable, he will be less likely to deny it and be like "hey could you help me out, I was just really curious about how often guys, you know, jack off or whatever, like when do you do it?"

if you mean why do we deny jacking off when we're cornered caught in the act, it's because most girls think it's kind of like cheating when a guy jacks off.

For the same exact reason girls deny it... Everybody does it, even if it isn't that often but everybody does it... Coming from my point of view, I wouldn't admit it either. Masturbation is usually viewed as disgusting or as an act of desperation and no one wants to be seen in that way. It's all a matter or reputation.
