Its an old wives tell you cant, but like all good myths it is based upon some truth. There is a method of contraception called the rhythm method, where you have unprotected sex when it is unlikely that the female will be fertile. This method is the favourite of religious catholic types. At its best you go to the doctor to have your menstrual cycle measured and dated and then you take regular internal temperature measurements (put a thermometer up your Virgina.)

Still doesn't work though, like all organic process the menstrual cycle is difficult to predict and can change and as testament to that fact, my parents were using the rhythm method when they conceived me. Just us a condom, their quick easy, you can see when they've gone wrong and they protect you from those nasty STDs. And any guy who refuses to wear one is a dick.

Everyone says it's so unlikely but my sister did with both her kids. Birth control made her hormonal and moody so she would use the calendar method, doesn't work. She now has two kiddos.

It's nearly impossible because the uterus has specific hormones active at this time in the female body that makes it nearly impossible to get pregnant. If you had sex during your period and are afraid of getting pregnant, you could always take Plan B or some other birth-control pill prescribed by the doctor. hope this helps
