my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex on tuesday. I am on birth control, but I have skipped/been late on a few pills the week before. I followed the instructions on my pill packet, and I made them up, so we thought we were fine. today I unexpecedtly started my period, which means I was ovulating in the past few days. however since I am getting my period, and I'm normally very cautious on my pills, is there a chance I could be pregnant?
Update: lemme try to make this clearer. here's my dilemma: if I got my period when I wasnt supposed to, that means I skipped too many pills and screwed things up, which means I couldve gotten pregnant. but if I got it, then does that mean I'm not pregnant?

You cannot have a period while you are pregnant by the very biological definition and function of the two. Think about it!
Your cycle is what causes a period! Your body releases hormones during this cycle. Those hormones send signals to your reproductive organs to perform certain tasks. An increase in hormones causes an egg to be released from your ovaries. While it travels, a layer of blood and tissue thickens to protect the uterine wall. If the egg is not fertilized, hormone levels drop and you start your period as that extra thick layer of blood and tissue detaches itself and comes out.
While you are pregnant, your body focuses on providing a healthy environment for the fetus. Your brain sends signals to your ovaries to stop the cycle so that the baby can grow. As a result, hormones continue to build and rise for the next nine months because it can't drop.
If you continued to have a period while you were pregnant, it would be shedding the lining of the uterine wall. This lining is what helps to nourish your baby each month. So in biological terms, it makes no sense to have a period while you were pregnant and simply not possible. Therefore, the spotting or bleeding that you are experiencing is caused by something other than your period.
Okay everyone who says you can't have a period when your pregnant is wrong.. Google it!
Also there is such thing as implantation bleeding that can occur usually 6 to 11 days after becoming pregnant google it.
(I love google) But.. Saying all that maybe check into a new form of birthcontrol if you can't take your pills appropriately. I know things happen that makes it hard for you to take them at the same time everyday, but its the only way proven to be effective. Or use a back up plan PROTECTION.
You have a few choices go take a morning after pill, or wait it out and take a pregnancy test in a few more weeks.
