Sorry you had to grow up without a dad, that sucks. However, manscaping isn't that difficult.
But you're going to need tools. Decide whether you prefer to use a razor (cleaner, higher risk of cuts) or electric. If you go electric, buy a shaver or beard groomer, and a separate body groomer. You do not want to use the same equipment for your face that you do for your body.
1. Facial Hair - This is basically preference, and ultimately you'll find that it's not your preference that matters so much as your girlfriend's. Some things however, must be kept up. Nobody likes a neckbeard, so be sure to shave your neck. If you wear a beard, make sure you keep it trimmed and neat.
2. Groin Hair - Again, this comes down to preference, but I've never met a girl who preferred her man to be completely shaven. Keep yourself nicely trimmed short, and most women will be very happy with that.
3. Chest Hair - Unless it's excessive, leave it alone. Most women prefer men to have some chest hair. If it ~is~ excessive, then just keep it trimmed short, to maybe 1/2".
4. Butt Hair - Leave this alone unless it bothers you or you expect your woman to be playing with your anus during sex.
5. Leg Hair - Leave this alone. Do not touch it. Ever.
6. Sideburns - This goes along with your facial hair preferences. Just make sure they're trimmed shorter than the rest of your beard. If you're wearing sideburns with no beard, then trim them down to the point that they're practically stubble. Nobody likes mutton chops.
That all depends on YOU" :D How are you comfortable? How would you like it to look? It`s all you and.or the type of women you`d like to attract. :) There isn`t a set type of women, but a general type... Such as, when I where my Spiderman T-shirts and jeans, and chains.. I tend to attract more alternative and nerdy guys. :) As opposed to when I go out with my hair up and where a pencil skirt, when I attract some older men and `preppier`guys. (again, generalizing.) You`re hair is just like your clothes, if you like it, and it`s comfy, go for it.
I don't know what's 'proper' - but I find hair on a man sexy.
As long as it's not excessive, hair in all of those areas is acceptable, and in a lot, (legs, face, groin, chest ) - is actually preferred, at least by me. As long as you're clean, and tidy - hair is good - completely overgrown and unkempt is not - then I'm sure you're fine.
Every girl will have a different preference, and facial hair looks better on some than others - but most girls will be happy with a clean and tidy in most other places.
