Why would a man compete against a woman he likes?

Why would a man compete against a woman, when the woman is also the one he is initially trying to impress and attract?

A man I know teases, compliments, asks my whereabouts from a close friend of mine, and has had the nerve to say "I love you" (jokingly) and "You are sexy" (seriously). Well, I am not numb to think that somehow, he has a thing on me.

But why is it that he also seems to "compete" against me? When I try to speak in class, his comments are negative and he makes sure that when it's his turn to speak, his speech is better than mine (even pointing the flaws from my speech!). When I speak about my dad, he speaks about his family the next time! When he compliments about how sexy I look in my dress, he also says I'm going to attract admirers (in a manner that seems to imply I'm intentionally dressing to attract admirers)!

He's kind of sweet. But he's also mean. He once told my friend that I'm "difficult". It's quiet confusing.

Please share some thoughts guys! ?
