Why do guys always say, "well even if we were together..." or "how would things be different if we were together?"

Depends. Generally i only say it as a reverse psychology thing in which if i want the girl to think of us as a couple, ill say something like that. But if it's com8ng from someone who was rejected by you or isn't interested in you, it's likely they are emphasizing what they "wont" do by saying that.
Girl: I left my deodorant at home, can i use yours?
Boy: Because I said so, now please just drop it.
Girl: Damn, no need to be a douche about it...
Boy: Look, "Even if we were together", i wouldn't let you use it.
It's general percieved that Boy Friends would do a hellava lot more for their girl than if they weren't, thus the "emphasis".0
