I'd try it sure. For 1 (first) date, if a second happens, then just the 2 of you. I'm kind of in between on it. I'm not much of a people person and to add that stress to the stress of a first date to isn't necessarily something I'd want, but, on the flip side, it might also help with awkwardness/silence which is good. As long as you don't pay more attention to them then you do him. Maybe ask him how he feels about it.
First date would better off be one on one, as it is a time to get to know each other not the time to share with another relationship. I did that mistake last year, and most of our conversations were about experiences the actual couple had not getting to know my actual date.
