when I was younger (in grade school) I tried to kiss a girls hand that I had a crush on, but she hit me in the face and I started crying...the fact that she didn't like me hurt more than the hit

My ex used to do it sometimes when he'd hold my hand. Like kiss my hand or fingers. But that didn't last long, lol. About halfway through our relationship, I was getting by on like bare-minimum 'everyday' kind of affection, outside of our usual hug and kiss goodbye, and leading up to sex and whatnot. -_- Which generally did not include cute things like that anymore.
My boyfriend does it all the time. If we're holding hands or hugging or something he'll just take my hand and press a kiss to my knuckles or something like that. But, then again, we're really cutesy, lovey-dovey and such so it's just standard protocol. He also lifts me over puddles, hahaha.

It's some peculiar thing I do. I only kiss the hand when I'm driving. I reach for her hand, flip it to the knuckle side, and kiss.
I'd be too shy to kiss a girl on the hand like Thor did in the movie. That's a bit too old fashion, even for me.

I could do it under right circumstance but mostly I would be wondering 'it's kinda outdated, what if she thinks I'm a bit weird for doing that?'
I have done and still do this on certain occasions:
1) If I know the lady well. I often greet close female acquaintances in this manner, and it just adds an overall atmosphere of respect to the meeting. Together with its obligatory bow, it seems to communicate "I admire your beauty and acknowledge your higher status; however, I am not presumptuous of a committed romantic relationship". Also, it indicates that the gentleman respects the lady's personal space.
I have found that it is a gesture that requires some degree of skill to perform correctly. The bow should be graceful and not abrupt. The touch on the lady's hand and / or fingers should be a very light one, as if handling a fine jewel.
2) If the lady I am meeting / being introduced to extends her hand in such a manner ( palm downward ). I also enjoy the smile and light giggle following a hand kiss - this is the reaction I have received most often upon such introductions.
I think some guys are skeptical to do it because girls like me get so embarrassed and we hate that, and I think a few girls are like that.
