What is the difference between a planned meal (hang out and get food or something) and a date?
What if one party is interested?

Getting together with a friend alone is always considered a "date". Whether it's for romantic purposes or not is up for debate. If one of the members pays for the others' meal, it's typically a romantic date. I've gone on dates with several female friends and usually pay only when I consider it a romantic date. Though, this cannot always be the case since I do occasionally pay for the meals of platonic female friends.0
