7 Great Dutch Movies Well Worth Watching

I do like watching Dutch movies, it’s nice to watch sometimes a movie in my own mother language instead of all the time in English. Many people here criticize the Dutch movies but I don’t think that is always fair. Okay the movies aren’t like the Hollywood movies but well these movies don’t have a great budget. Anyway there are surely movies which are worth watching.

1970-1979

Turkish delight (Turks fruit)

Based Jan Wolkers’ novel about the passionate and very physical relationship between a young man and a dying girl. Don’t let all the boobs, bums and other unnecessary nudity scare you away from this one! Without saying too much about the movie, it will make you feel like yiu’ve been on an emotional rollercoaster.

Soldier of Orange (Soldaat van Oranje)

Loosely based on a true story, it’s about a group of students in Leiden and their adventures during the war. A touching movie about friendship, war, loyalty and the eradication of innocence – this is a must see for anyone looking to understand the Dutch WWII story. One of the famous scenes of the movie is a tango danced by Rutger Hauer and Jeroen Krabbé.

1980-1989

The Assault (De Aanslag)

During the 2nd world-war, the Dutch resistance kills a collaborator in the street where the 12 year old Anton Steenwijk lives. The man was shot in front of his neighbors house, but is moved by them to the house of the family Steenwijk. Because of this, his father, mother and brother are killed by the Germans, and their house is set to fire. During his life, Anton meets several people that tell him more about what really happened on the night of the assault.

1990 - 1999

Character (Karakter)

Dreverhaven a mighty man gets his maid pregnant but she doesn’t want to marry him and leaves the house. She raise the son alone and refuse anything from Dreverhaven. His revenge is that he makes the life of his son very hard. The son becomes an lawyer and the the battle between the two get’s heavier.

This movie won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1998.

2000 - 2009

Black Book (Zwartboek)

Another Paul Verhoeven film is Zwartboek. A more modern film about WWII, starring Carice van Houten of Game of Thrones. This movie centres on a Jewish singer who tries to infiltrate the German SS by going undercover and starting a relationship with a German Officer. This movie was nominated for several awards and won the BAFTA for best non-English speaking film.

Simon

A movie about an unlikely friendship between 2 men. One of them is gay and polite, and the other is an outspoken, humorous heterosexual that has cancer, and might die soon. The movie then goes back and forth along some fourteen years, starting with the day these guys met.

2010 – now

The happy housewife (De gelukkige huisvrouw)

Another movie with Carice van Houten. A touching and kinda funny movie about the universal themese like birth, dead and motherhood. A housewife who can live an nice style of living and has everything she desires. But has trouble adjusting to the birth of her son.

If you decide to watch one of these mvoies then I wish you a pleasant view! It would be nice when you let me know what you think of the movie.

Enjoy watching!
