Tips on writing melodic synth music?

Any songwriters here? I'm messing around with my new keyboard and recording program and I'm getting some cool sounds, it's just really tricky to get a solid idea down. Some ideas come out sounding corny, some too polished - like they'd need to be "dirtied up" a bit, and some just don't hold my interest.

Anyone have some tips on how to get a solid demo going and how to move it forward?

  • Listen to "Wishing (If I Had A Photograph of You)" by Flock of Seagulls.
Also, listen to Emerson Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, Yes... pretty much any progressive rock from the 1970s or New Wave late 1970s-1980s music.
