  • if a situation is getting out of control in a way that could very well end in disaster, this is analogous to the 'bleeding.' Applying pressure is analogous to taking charge of the situation.

    similar phrases might include "a stitch in time saves nine" and, to a lesser extent "rip the bandage off".

    • Metaphorically speaking, if you were bleeding, and you wanted it to stop. you metaphorically place your hand over the bleeding area and apply pressure... It will, metaphorically stop the bleeding. ;)
