Why Do We Need Mother's Day?

Every year when February 14th rolls around, you hear scores of angry people mad that we need "a day" to celebrate love when it should be celebrated year round. Valentine's Day is just a day, people say, cooked up to sell cards and candy, and yet, Mother's Day comes around, and the majority of those angry voices become complacent and silent in celebrating Mom one day a year or on down the road, celebrating Dad, one day a year.

If you are lucky to have a mom, and you are lucky, carry that same angry sentiment you have about Valentine's day, into what you feel about your mom. She has been there for you since your first heart beat, from the first time you were able to kick, since you first hiccup. Some people treat their mother's like dirt beneath the nail or they tell themselves, they care about their mom's, but they can't even bother to say thank you when she does something for them from the heart or pick up the phone or send a text.

We take advantage, because that's what children do. We assume our mom's will always be there and as tired as mom is, as frustrated as mom is, as angry as mom is, we think she has this unlimited supply of energy to do our bidding. And for many mom's, that's what it feels like to have to get up at 6am to take you to school, or open up her wallet to loan you "another $20," or cook for a troop of hungry kids after a long day of work, or stay by your side when you have surgery.

These are things good mom's do to make sure you are always happy and healthy and feel loved by them, and they do it selflessly, tirelessly, endlessly until you can get out into the world on your own...and even then, if you call, they come running. Mother's Day is one day of the year, and if you have a mom or someone who has raised you under her wing, DO get off your butt and spend the day with her and tell her you love her, but when the next day comes and the next, don't forget to say thank-you and to show her as much love and respect as she continues to show you because, whether you want to think about it or not, tomorrow has no guarantees, so we should value the people we have now in our lives because when they are gone, it's too late.

I feel like Mother's day (just like Father's day) is actually worse than not having one. Having Mother's day gives many the belief that as long as they say "I love you" and send them a card that day, they're good for the whole year... and they're forced to do it, many times it's not genuinely.
I'm 100% sure a mother would be happier to get a random call one day saying you wanna take her out to dinner or just have lunch together.
Love and appreciate your parents every day of the year, not just one. I haven't been the best son to my great parents, and when I stop and think about it, I feel guilty about a lot of things. I wish it was easier to open up to them.

Mother's Day is unnecessary, we should love our mothers, and show them, every day.

Would you have reflected on this whole idea, right now -- with whatever positive consequences for yr relationship with yr mother -- if not for this discussion about Mother's Day?

Of course, people should have consideration and empathy for their loved ones 365.25 days per year, not just 1 day per year.
... but, sometimes you need something like Mother's Day as a REMINDER.

@redeyemindtricks Oh yeah, I've thought about this for some time already. I know I need to change. I'm not bad anymore, maybe because we don't live together anymore, but I still fail to show my emotions and affection towards them. I know they know I love them, but it's not the same to just know, than to know AND see it.

It makes sense, but in my house my parents always said these kind of days are irrelevant, because they're my parents every day of the year, so they will act like that every day, and I should appreciate that every day. Same with Valentine's. So that idea has been in my head since I was a kid.

The good news is that mothers -- at least most of them, anyway (let's leave out the weirdly controlling ones who create mama's boys... I don't understand those people) -- are SO happy with SO little.
Like srsly, 1 or 2 handwritten notes a year will pretty much light up that woman's LIFE.

Look man, I'm so totally with you here, I rlly am. (I also think Christmas and birthdays, in that order, are THE two worst days to give people gifts -- for what are presumably the same reasons you have in mind here.)

But... rlly, these things serve their purpose. I swear, they do.

In fact -- Yr comments here are not only heartwarming (because you luvs yr mama <3 <3 ), but, they're also proof that yr family is... fundamentally not dysfunctional, lol.
Because, I swear to you, these token holidays are VERY often THE days when people in dysfunctional families actually become motivated to... well, give a shit, and actually **try** a little bit for once.
Just like parents who otherwise barely acknowledge their children's existence have a way of popping out of the woodwork (with genuinely good intentions, a surprising % of the time) around Christmastime.

It is what it is.

We need Mother's Day because womxn give birth. Men cannot give birth. We should value and appreciate women because they honestly do not get enough attention. We do everything that men do but still get paid far less than men. We are still underrepresented in public offices so we should bring more attention to mothers everywhere! We should get rid of Father's days, because everything is about men by default. It is "History" and not "Herstory". All subjects are about men. We need more women's studies and we need more appreciation for Women's Day. It should not just be a day, it should be a whole month. That would be a good start.

I'm a mother of three.
My kids drive me bonkers most of the time but I love them so much.
When ever the kids want something, need something, have a nightmare, wake and been sick, having trouble with homework or just need a hug who do they ask for MUM.
We get judged and criticised for the decisions that we make, mainly from other mothers.
I have given up so much to become a mother and all ask for is one day where I do absolutely nothing.
One thing is that you are never too grown up to tell your mother that you love her, so say it when ever you have the chance.
