Lol wow, I guess that's a lesson learned, huh? It's hard for some guys to recover after hearing the dreaded "I like you, but I just wanna be friends" line dropped on them. If the guy really was into you, that single statement alone could have crushed him through epic proportions. I suppose he was partly to blame for having given you mixed signals, i.e. telling you that he "liked a different girl". Not really sure why he would've said that in the first place, unless he was just shy when put on the spot.
There are several ways to go about this, none of them easy, none of them being the absolute "right" way, but if you want to try to mend the friendship back together then I suggest approaching him and admitting that both of you reacted rather stupidly, and that it would be better if you both started over. Furthermore, if you happen to be single and actually like the guy, then why don't you give him a chance to take you up on a date?
