Men's Hairstyles, Part 2 - Short Styles

ChromAzonyx108

Guys have more choice in short hairstyles than girls do. If you want to embrace that then read on. These styles are also easy to maintain.

...Aw man, do I really have to make sub-categories? If I get any of this wrong then please correct me, as these styles are very similar.

11. Buzz Cut

These are really short hairstyles. A variety of styles fall under this category (although this involves some semantics).

A. Butch Cut

A butch cut is a type of haircut in which the hair is cut short, generally between 1/4 and 3⁄4 inch (using guards 0-5 on the hair clippers). Depending on the length, it may also be referred to as either an induction cut or a burr cut.

I) Induction Cut

This is the shortest style possible without using razor blades and shaving your head bald. To give an induction cut, you would not use any guards on the hair clippers, and that’s why it is sometimes referred to as ‘number 0’ or ‘zero cut.’

II) Burr Cut

This is the same style as an induction cut but uses a guard number 1 (sometimes 2).

III) Brush Cut

With this style the hair is cut short on the sides and back, the hair is left a bit longer on top, and the hair on top is combed backwards to resemble the bristles of a brush.

B. Crew Cut

This is a cross between the butch and pompadour styles. It is graduated in length from the longest hair at the front hairline to the shortest at the back of the crown such that in a side profile the outline of the top hair approaches the horizontal.

C. Flattop

The hair on the top of the head is usually standing upright and cut to form a flat-appearing deck which may be level or it may be upward or downward sloping.

You may recognize this style from Hank Hill:

D. Ivy League

Also known as a Harvard Clip or Princeton, this is a type of crew cut in which the hair is longer on top and may have a side part.

E. Fade

The hair is clipped in such a way that it appears to “fade” or “disappear” into the skin, thus giving the cut its name. This style seems to be more popular lately.

F. High and Tight

A variant of the fade style, this one usually features short hair on the sides and back, with a strip of hair on top.

I would have also included the Caesar Cut if I hadn't already included it in Part 1. Next up I plan to tackle eccentric men's hairstyles in Part 3.
