Just the other day I was exiting my car, and my big old curly hair quite literally got snagged on a tree and I had to spend like a good 30 seconds untangling myself. It wouldn't have been so embarrassing except there was a lady sitting in her car across from me trying not so hard to stifle a laugh. Just another day in the life having big curly hair.

I think most curl girls have a love hate relationship with their curls. Curly hair has a tendency...a lot of tendency, to have a mind of it's own. Some times, it participates and lets you style it with relative ease, and other days no matter how much product you spritz on, or massage in, or pray works, it just doesn't want to play nicely and you end up snapping like 4 bands or using a million bobby pins to try to get it to respect you.

People always seem a bit obsessed by your hair. They want to touch it and often do without your express permission. I was introduced to a friend of a friend at a party and 5 minutes after that intro, she just randomly jammed her entire hand all the way to the root of my hair which was extremely awkward. She just seemed to amused by it, but I made sure to stay clear of her because it was weird and completely made me feel annoyed. You just dig your hands into someone's head you just met!?!

Curly hair doesn't just belong to one race. It is seen across the globe. It comes in all volumes, curl patterns, colors, and textures. It's this explosion of hair tumbling down the shoulders, or popping up in a big afro, or zig zagging and curling every which way.

One of the best things sometimes is that it makes you a bit more unique. You're known for your hair. You become known as girl with curls, and it gives you a bit of pride to know that that description belongs to you. Some with other textures literally envy you and try to imitate you even when truth be told, it goes both ways because most people tend to want what they don't have.

So you cancel your plans sometimes and spend all afternoon with the dreaded straightener trying to pull and yank your curls into submission. Your arms hurt, your head hurts, your back hurts...you want to give up, but you can't because now after 2 hours, you've only done half your head, and you can't go out half curl, half straight. You wonder why you even try to fight the curl and pull it straight, but even if people do envy your hair, even you want change from time to time even if that means you have to go through 4 episodes of your fav Netflix show before you're done.

You love your hair, but it's a lot of work and money. Your shampoo and conditioner are just the tip of the iceberg on how much you spend on your hair. You know that as soon as the salon sees what they are working with, the dollars signs go up. Your hair also causes a lot of damage like snapped rubber bands, broken combs and brushes, lost bobby pins, the list goes on.

Your hair also has a few well known enemies like the roof of your car, headphones, hats, hoodies, trees, glitter, terrible shampoo, rubber bands, and sleeping on it. I haven't worn a hat that fit that wasn't pinned on since probably grade school!

At the end of the day, you've got to love your hair just the way it curls down from your scalp to your ends, because it's yours and it's beautiful. No matter the troubles and headaches it can cause from time to time, it is a part of you, and a part you should be proud of. Don't ever let anyone tell you your hair is not beautiful or needs to change!
