My Addiction: To Hair Dye and How Henna Saved My Hair

When I was a baby, I had thick, curly blond hair. As I got older, my hair darkened into a deep dark brown but it was still curly. I was 12 and in the 6th grade when I first dyed my hair. I got a lot of compliments and I thought that if one box of hair dye can make this much positive change, just imagine what another box of hair dye can do. After that, I continued to dye my hair on a regular basis. I've had a burning scalp, thought nothing of it, and continued to dye my hair. In the past, I've made my hair so ridiculously thin but I continued to dye it.

I constantly told myself that whatever current dye job I was doing was the last time, but then my roots would come in, I would remember how much I hated my real hair color, and then I headed back to the store to get more hair dye. I don't know why I kept dyeing my hair when I hated what the chemicals did to my hair. I guess I liked feeling like a new person with just a simple dye job. My hair has been been black, brown, blonde, caramel, bright red, purple, orange, and copper. I dyed my hair so much, that when I was filling out information for my permit, I asked my mom what color she thought my hair was. She simply said, "I don't know it's whatever color you dyed it this week." Of course it didn't help that I was frying my hair every day with a flat iron.

I was 17 when I tried henna for the first time. My hair was dark blonde at the time and my hair came out like Merida's hair from Brave but it was a little more neon. Luckily the henna matured and it turned into a very pretty copper color. I loved using henna and I think henna saved my hair. Henna is a natural hair dye so my hair got healthier and I could feed my addiction until I weened myself off. One day I stopped using henna all together because I decided I love my hair, so that definitely helped me refrain from dying my hair.

I cut my hair to my jaw bone and I swore off hot hair tools and I allowed my hair to go back to dark brown. About a month before last Halloween, I dyed my hair black. I really hope that's my last time. My hair was already a dark brown so it took the dye really well. So well, that my hair was black for months. The last time I can remember having thick, curly brown hair was in fifth grade before I first dyed my hair. I think my hair has forgiven me because it's thick, curly, and dark brown again. I really love my hair now and don't want to ruin it. Now I have thick hair problems to deal with. (This is about to be TMI feel free to skip) I just had to get my shower drain cleaned recently because the water kept clogging. My dad thought I had a rat in my shower drain but it was a giant clump of my hair.

Henna has worked a miracle on my hair. Shea butter, organic shampoos and conditioners, vitamins like biotin, and a weekly hair mask have also helped. My hair is thick and curly, so I can go a week shampoo it once, and it will be fine. In a more humid climate specifically New Orleans, I was able to go almost two weeks and not shampoo once. But I have to condition my hair every other day. This method is called co-washing. But when I do shampoo my hair, life basically stops. I have to do a hair mask then shampoo and condition. I try to schedule my shampoo day on a day that I'm not doing anything and will be home all day anyways and most days, that's a Sunday. I don't think I will dye it again. I can see myself using henna for henna tattoos. I did a tattoo sleeve of henna myself because I got bored and it was awesome. I'm not this artistic but it looked like this and I put the Deathly Hallows symbol on top. I think I still have some henna in the freezer.

My favorite hair mask is egg mixed mayonnaise. Sometimes I add avocado, but I try not to because avocado is expensive. I use a shampoo bar from Lush. It's bright orange, called Brazilliant, and works great. It also accentuates my curls. Lush can be pricey but it's fine because it will last a long time. If you're going to keep dyeing your hair, at least research natural ways to dye your hair. The beauty industry makes a profit off of our insecurities. To love yourself is a rebellious act.
