Cosmetics and Visual Effects

I'm surprised to find so many guys on here who have a strong distaste for cosmetics. I'm not among them.

For most girls, I tend to find them visually more attractive if they have a touch of cosmetics, though my preference leans towards a more light and natural look.

I tend to like cases where those of us lacking a trained eye might not even know the girl was wearing make-up unless we saw the same girl at times without it to establish a comparison.

I've never minded that it's an "illusion". It doesn't bother me that this is not representative of how the girl looks like when she's snoring in my bed. I enjoy this illusion and I enjoy it when the girl is presenting herself at her best when we go out on dates.

Visual Effects

What I've noticed is a trend that seems parallel to my own line of work. I work in the VFX industry, developing algorithms and software for computer-generated imagery.

A lot of people out there claim to "hate" CG. I'm somewhat among these people in that I think CG is often inappropriately used and prefer practical effects when possible.

Nevertheless, what people typically mean when they say they hate CG is that they hate what they can recognize as CG.

Cosmetics and Visual Effects

What they don't necessarily realize is that there's far more CG out there that they cannot recognize as even being CG in the first place. When we see something like a CG spaceship or creature, it's obvious as being such, but so many of the effects in films and television are not obvious as having involved any computer graphics.

Game of Thrones

As an example of how much we may not recognize as CG, take Game of Thrones. This show is very heavy on computer-generated imagery, yet with the exception of the obvious cases like Daenerys' dragons or some of the most epic shots in the show, it's not obvious.

It's not obvious even to me and I'm working in this industry with a very carefully trained eye since I'm developing a lot of the techniques and algorithms involved in these shots.

This above video only highlights the work of one studio. Many studios are involved, and the show is filled to the brim with computer graphics. Yet I think for people who watch this clip, it becomes clear that most of the CG work in the show is not obvious as such.

Cosmetics

My sneaking suspicion is that, as with the case of people who "hate" CG, such is the case for many who "hate" cosmetics. They hate what they can obviously recognize as such.

I could be wrong and there might be a good number of guys who strongly prefer only girls without any cosmetics whatsoever. Perhaps some might be into a completely natural look and prefer girls with hairy legs and armpits. I don't know.

In any case, I wanted to throw out this hypothesis that perhaps the reason so many claim to hate cosmetics is for very similar reasons as to why so many claim to hate CG.
