What is underneath makeup?

We've pretty much all heard these overused, cliche makeup shaming lines before: "This is why guys have trust issues" or "This is why guys should take girls swimming on the first date".

Being someone who has been interested in makeup and has worn it from a young age, it saddens me when I see young girls(and guys) being put down for their simple act of wearing or interest in makeup.

I still remember once my freshmen year of high school I had to take all my makeup off for an event and felt so, so devastated when a girl merely said to me, "Wow, you look so different without makeup on!" I guess it was the way she said it that made the comment extremely offensive and confidence shattering. After that encounter, I never let anyone see me without makeup for a long time because I saw that comment being equivalent to "Wow, you're so ugly without makeup!" Once this happens, you get into a mindset in which you think makeup is the only thing that can make you beautiful. I also know many have experienced this thought before and that I'm not the only one. But I guess what I'm left wondering is how and why this statement is such a bad thing? Of course people are going to look at least slightly different without makeup on, but how is this rocket science?

Makeup builds confidence

Now I understand some people don't agree with the act of "covering up your face", but makeup isn't all about the act of covering. Sure makeup can cover up some redness, blemishes, under eye circles or anything that may seem "unappealing" to others, but why should that bother anyone else if the person applying the makeup is doing it for themselves? [To these makeup shamers:]Are you really that conceited where if someone wants to cover up something or enhance a certain feature they have, you're going to put them down for it because that's not exactly what they look like? It's still their face and it's still their features, right? So, what's the problem? Makeup doesn't change personalities, interests, qualities, or anything of the sort, so why should it matter to anyone else if it makes whoever's wearing it feel more confident?

Makeup is not a "mask"

Makeup, in many ways, is art. It's a way to create something beautiful whether it's on a canvas or on the face. It can be washed off and what you're left with is just as beautiful. I've learned to love what's underneath my makeup, even though it's taken me awhile to do so. So what if you have acne, redness, dark circles, a big nose, small eyes, big eyes, sparse eyebrows; you can change it, hide it or embrace it! No one should be shamed for what their choice may be and I hope that makeup can be seen as something more than just a "mask" people wear to cover their "insecurities".
