Girls, if you haven't worn earrings for a long while is it normal for lobes to turn a bit red? No pain, itch, swelling or blood?

I've always been able to wear cheap metal earrings before but could my ears be having a reaction to them years later? The pierced holes haven't closed up at all and there isn't any sign of an infection, just a reddish color around the area of the earrings.
Yes, ears need to get used to wearing earrings again.
