Have you ever been told that you were handsome?

My boyfriend just told me I'm the only one who's ever told him that he's handsome (except his mother) I thought that was weird so why not make a poll

  • I've only ever been told that by family members as well. No-one ever tells a guy that he's good looking unless he or she has a sexual interest in that guy. That's just the way it is, far more so than the opposite's true for girls. Girls compliment each other's appearances, and get complimented on their appearance by everyone. Guys, on the other hand, deride each other's appearances, and constantly get their appearances trashed by pretty much everyone who comments on it.

  • By my mom has, but her eyesight blows and she is kinda biased so I don't really put much value in her complements on my appearance.

Oh, I've been told by people on here, but of course they had never seen me. Just a couple of my better looking photos. And they've never seen my faults either on those photos.

  • Only by drunk women lol

  • I have been told that by a few girls other than my mother. Honestly, the effect it has depends on who I'm getting it from. For example, I didn't really care when this one girl told me because I know she tends to lie to make people feel better. But when this other girl told me, I felt good because she was actually attracted to me.

  • Yes, handsome is actually the compliment that I receive the most from people (not including family).

  • Yes I have. I just say "thank you" and go about my business. I've had self esteem issues in the past so I just think "I'm just me." Probably the reason why I don't pick up on flirting. *shrugs*

I don't know people tell me that all the time even when I don't believe it of myself but maybe it's because people just don't like giving compliments were you are

Mom, dad, family, girlfriends, stangers, bosses, coworkers... but I think it might be a cultural thing, just being nice.
I do consider myself handsome but nothing jaw dropping.

What Girls Said 4

  • If someone **you're not already in a relationship with** calls you "pretty" (women) or "handsome" (men)... then, that's a pretty good indicator that the person has NO SEXUAL INTEREST WHATSOEVER in you.

    I mean... think about it.
"Pretty" and "handsome" are so **asexual** that they're actually ok to use for 7-year-olds!
Like, if you wanted to say something to a mother about her 7-year-old son or daughter's super cute face... you'd DEFINITELY use the word "handsome" (son) or "pretty" (daughter).
Because... those are the words that you use SPECIFICALLY to express a COMPLETELY NON-SEXUAL compliment.

    Yep.
That's what those words are for.

Someone who's actually *interested* has a whole array of other words they could potentially use. Hot... fine... good-looking... sexy... bangin'... etc. Basically, they'll use ANY word EXCEPT "handsome"/"pretty".

    __

If you're **already in a relationship**... then it's a little different.

In relationships, people use all sorts of cutesy pet names for each other -- sweetie, snugglebuns, etc -- that they wouldn't use outside of a relationship (except with heavy sarcasm).

Similarly... if you're actually in a rl with someone, THEN it's less weird for them to call you "handsome"/"pretty". This is kinda like "I want to pinch yr cheeks, you're just so cuuuuuuute".

It's still a very asexual compliment. (I'd actually be deeply hurt if my husband ever called me "pretty" without irony. I need to be HOT for him! I need to be irresistible, sexy, bangin', etc.) But... that's just the way some partners talk to each other -- over-the-top cutesy, like, the same way you'd talk about a 7-year-old.
