OK that's not right. How do you dress now? Like jeans N tops with hoodies? Nothing wrong with that, but if you dressed a little older, maybe nicer pants N blouses, maybe even tuck or belt em sometimes, kinda looking nice N pretty, yet a little more professional N ready to get business done N go after what You want. That's a look I see with girls lately just a little older than you, like mid 2 late 20's, N they're pretty N hot, but not in a cute way, N they look like they're a bit more grown up, minds on getting a future N leaving younger (N cute) days behind. Not everybody likes dressing that way, so don't do what you don't like JUST to change your image, or you'll hate it. But if it sounds doable, it works, at least in my eyes...
Would you like to be perceived as hot, awsome, beautiful,etc. All are words just like cute. And being cute shouldn't be a bad thing. If you want peopel to take you seriously you can always change your hair style, change your fashion,etc. Instead of being a cheetah for halloween you could had been something more sexyier like a nurse or somethign like that. Then I bet that frat guy would not had patted you on your head.
Part of the difference between cute and sexy is your attitude. Cute girls are attractive in an endearing girl next door way. Sexy/hot/fine girls have this confidence like they know they're hot and they have control of their sexuality and womanhood. Doesn't have to mean slutty or promiscuous but they are just the grown up version of attractive.
Cute girls are pleasantly attractive.
Hot girls are emphasize their feminine wiles and aren't afraid to make the most of their features. Show some skin but not excessively like you're taking customers. Wear heels. Go for a sultry bedroom eyes sexy vibe.
Why does it bother you, and what would you rather be instead? If you know what you DO want to be, then you can go about getting there.

Start smoking cigarettes and getting drunk every morning as soon as you get out of bed, offer to sleep with all of your fathers friends for free beer, and buy a leather thong and wear it everywhere you go. That should get the ball rollin'.
You should be OK with cute. It's an in-thing with guys these days. The so-called drop dead gorgeous girls always seem unapproachable.
Some friends and I actually had a discussion about the hierarchy of descriptive words for women recently (don't judge, we were bored), and it may make you feel better to know that cute was voted at the top.
It actually has most everything to do with your face. Get an eyepatch. Smile less. Develop wrinkles.
