I'm just very curious about this. I personally can't imagine getting my ears pierced. Why would I deliberately punch holes in my body under no anesthesia, and prevent them from healing properly? Yet the vast majority of girls have theirs done, and multiple piercings are growing more and more mainstream among both sexes.

I pierced my ears when I was 10, but had to re-pierce them a year later since the holes closed.
Those are the only piercings I have, so I can't speak for other body piercings, but it was not painful at all. The finger pricks that you have done at a doctor's office are far worse. A piercing that is professionally done and properly cleaned is hardly painful at all. At the time that I had them pierced, it was mainly because it seemed every girl had her ears pierced but me and I thought earrings were very sophisticated and pretty looking. Now, I love wearing earrings because I have very short hair, and combined with earrings it's a very fun look.
About your comment on multiple piercings--I'm not too interested in getting any other piercings (although I had a male friend who pierced his hips and I've been fond of hip piercings since.) But I am a big fan of tattoos, and I think that's sort of the same idea--why purposely do something that is painful and leaves a permanent mark on your body? I think it all comes down to self expression. It is what's becoming "cool" with the whole ridiculous emo trend nowadays, so I do think a lot of kids get these sorts of things done just to show them off to their friends. But for me, art is my passion, and I love the idea of having art on my body, especially something that represents an important part of me and my life. Obviously, someone who has a lot of piercings on their body is a little outside the norm, and that may just be their way of expressing that part of themselves to the rest of the world.0
